How to send money to the Republic of the Congo in 2026: the CFA franc at the euro rate, banks in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire and profit transfers

5 min read ·

In 2026 the Central African franc is still worth 655.957 per euro, so a transfer to the Republic of the Congo is most conveniently sent in euros. We show how money arrives at banks in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, which papers are needed for each sum and what the 2003 investment charter guarantees to those who invest in the country.

Money goes to the Republic of the Congo in euros or dollars to a bank account in Brazzaville or Pointe-Noire, credited in Central African CFA francs. The franc is pegged to the euro at 655.957, so a sum in euros loses nothing on the rate. In early October 2026 a dollar was worth about 587 francs.

655.957 francs per euro: a rate unchanged since 1999

The Republic of the Congo is a member of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa together with Cameroon, Gabon, Chad, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. The six countries share a central bank and a currency. Since 1 January 1999 the franc has been pegged to the euro at 655.957, and this rate does not change.

For a sender in Europe this means that €10,000 always becomes 6,559,570 francs, and only bank fees need to be counted. The dollar moves together with the euro-dollar rate. A manager will suggest which currency is better for sending your sum.

The community's currency rules have applied since 1 March 2019. For a transfer from abroad the bank looks at the purpose and the documents, and credits a resident of the country in francs. So from eurozone countries it is better to send euros straight away, without an intermediate exchange.

Mistakes cost more than fees: dollars exchanged first into euros and then into francs, a transfer without the purpose and documents the bank checks under the community's currency rules, an incomplete 23-character account number and a large sum without papers on its source. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency of the transfer, gather the source-of-funds documents for the bank in Brazzaville and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the sum, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.

Brazzaville and Kinshasa: two capitals on the banks of one river

Brazzaville stands on the right bank of the Congo River, directly opposite Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These are two different countries with different money: Brazzaville uses the CFA franc, Kinshasa the Congolese franc and the dollar. So money between the cities goes as an international transfer, even though only the river separates them.

The country's second centre is the port of Pointe-Noire on the Atlantic coast, a city of oil companies and sea trade. The 510 km Congo-Ocean railway links it with the capital.

An account number at the country's banks has 23 characters: the bank code, the branch code, the account number and a key. In the international format the country letters and 2 check digits are added, 27 characters in all. More about the capital is on the Brazzaville page.

The 2003 investment charter: profits and savings from salaries can be sent abroad

The 2003 law on the investment charter guarantees foreign investors and workers the right to transfer abroad profits, savings from salaries and money from selling or closing a business. Companies also get access to foreign currency to buy equipment, raw materials and services abroad.

Benefits under the charter are granted by the national investment commission. At its first session of 2025 it approved 9 companies with investments of about $910 million (over 530 billion francs). If an ordinary bank transfer for your project takes too long, there are usually more options than it seems: a manager will choose a route.

A transfer to Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, step by step

Up to $10,000. The payment purpose and the recipient's details are enough: family support, studies, renting a home.

$10,000-100,000. The bank in Brazzaville will ask where the money comes from: attach six months of statements and a sale contract, an income certificate or a gift agreement. For an investment in a company, add the contract and the investment decision.

From $100,000. A full file on the source of wealth is gathered; details are in proof of source of funds and sending large sums abroad, and moving capital step by step on the capital relocation page. A manager will work out the terms for a large transfer in advance.

From Brazzaville to Kinshasa, Luanda and N'Djamena

To the Democratic Republic of the Congo money goes in dollars: in Kinshasa almost all deposits are held in foreign currency. Dollars are sent to Angola, and a bank in Luanda exchanges them into kwanzas. To Chad and the Central African Republic money goes in CFA francs within one currency zone, without exchange.
