How to send money to San Marino in 2026: euros from Italy and Europe in 1 business day, from other countries through a correspondent bank

5 min read ·

San Marino has been part of the single euro payments area since 2014, so in 2026 a transfer from Italy goes just as within Europe. We show what details a bank of the republic needs, how much is protected on a deposit, how a foreigner buys a flat and what documents to prepare for the sum.

Money is sent to San Marino in euros to an account at a bank of the republic: the country uses the euro under an agreement with the European Union and has been part of the single euro payments area since 1 February 2014. The 27-character account number is built the same way as an Italian one, and a transfer from Italy and other European countries takes 1 business day.

How a transfer from Italy reaches a bank on Mount Titano

San Marino is surrounded by Italy on all sides, and most payments come from there. The euro has been in use here since 2002, and the current monetary agreement with the EU has been in force since 2012: the republic issues its own euro coins, while the banknotes are common to the whole area. For an Italian bank this is an ordinary transfer within the single payments area: the sender needs the recipient's account number and name.

The republic's central bank brought the rules for euro transfers in line with current European standards by a 2024 regulation, so the details and timing here are the same as in Italy.

Money from countries outside Europe arrives through a correspondent bank in Italy or another country of the area, in 1-3 business days. Which path is shorter for your sum and currency a manager will tell you.

A deposit at a bank in San Marino: 100,000 euros and payout in 7 days

Deposits at the republic's banks are protected up to 100,000 euros ($120,000) per depositor at each bank. All of a person's accounts at one bank are added up, and for a joint account the limit is counted for each owner. Since 1 January 2024 the insurance payout is made in 7 business days instead of the former 10.

We will help you send money to San Marino

Mistakes cost more than fees: a transfer from a country outside Europe with an extra currency exchange, an account number confused with an Italian one, paying for a flat to details other than the notary's and a large sum without papers on its origin. We will help you avoid them: we will choose a transfer route, put together documents on the origin of the money for the bank in San Marino and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.

A flat in San Marino: buying without permission from the Council of Twelve

Since 2018 a foreigner buys a house or a flat in San Marino without the permission of the Council of Twelve that was required before. The deal is handled by a notary: the notary checks the buyer and attaches the necessary certificates to the deed. A residence permit is obtained separately, on its own terms.

The money for the purchase is transferred to the details the notary gives, by the date the deed is signed. The bank will ask for the contract and a document on the origin of the money, and a manager will tell you which papers a bank in San Marino accepts.
