How to send money to Iceland in 2026: euros from Europe in 1 business day, kronur and buying a home

5 min read ·

In 2026 euros go to Iceland under the single euro payments area rules within a business day, and a dollar costs about 122 kronur. We show what the recipient needs for an Icelandic account, why the account number contains a personal ID number, when to exchange into kronur and how a foreigner pays for a home.

Want to send a transfer to Iceland right now? A manager will suggest the best terms. Work out the transfer cost

Money goes to Iceland to an account at an Icelandic bank in kronur or in foreign currency. The country is part of the European Economic Area and of the single euro payments area, so euros from Europe arrive in 1 business day, and the recipient's bank exchanges them into kronur at the day's rate. On 8 October 2026 a dollar cost 122.47 kronur at the Central Bank of Iceland rate.

A personal ID number inside the account number: what the recipient in Iceland needs

An Icelandic account number of 26 characters is built unusually: its last 10 digits are the owner's personal ID number, which every resident of Iceland has. The account is tied to this number, so the recipient needs it even before the first transfer.

A foreigner who does not live in Iceland gets a temporary system ID number: under the 2021 rules it is requested by an Icelandic organisation such as a bank or an employer, and banking services are expressly named among the purposes. Someone who moves there to live gets a number on registering their place of residence.

If the recipient does not yet have a number, there are usually more options for receiving the first payment than it seems: tell a manager about your situation, and they will find a route for your case.

The krona floats: when to exchange euros and dollars

Since 14 March 2017 money has moved freely into and out of Iceland, and the market sets the krona rate every day. Icelandic banks keep accounts not only in kronur but also in euros and dollars, so a large sum for buying a home is kept in foreign currency and exchanged into kronur by the payment date.

A deposit at an Icelandic bank is protected up to 100,000 euros ($120,000) under the 1999 deposit insurance act, about 13.7 million kronur at the rate of 8 October 2026. When it pays to exchange your sum, a manager will tell you.

A home in Iceland: a minister's authorisation or a declaration

A resident of Iceland and a citizen of a European Economic Area country buy a home without special authorisation: a buyer from the area files a declaration together with the contract for registration. Someone who does not live in Iceland and is not from the area gets an authorisation from the Minister of Justice under the 1966 act on the right to own real estate. A lease of up to 3 years needs no authorisation.

So money for a home is sent after the authorisation or the registration of the declaration. The capital is covered on the Reykjavik page, and taxes for people who move there on the taxes in Iceland page.

We will help you send money to Iceland

Mistakes cost more than fees: a transfer to the account of a recipient who does not yet have a personal ID number, a large sum exchanged into kronur long before the payment, paying for a home before the minister's authorisation, and money without papers on where it came from. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and currency of the transfer, gather the documents on the source of the money for the bank in Reykjavik and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the sum, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.
