How to send money to Denmark in 2026: a krone pegged to the euro, a personal number and gifts up to 80,600 kroner

7 min read ·

In 2026 an 18-character Danish account accepts kroner, euros or dollars: euros from the European Union are credited within 1 business day, and other countries send money in 1-3 business days. A small amount needs only a purpose and a note on how you know the recipient, while from $10,000 a Danish bank expects a six-month statement and a paper on the source.

Want to send a transfer to Denmark right now? A manager will suggest the best terms. Calculate the transfer cost

Money is sent to Denmark in Danish kroner or euros to an account at a Danish bank. The krone is pegged to the euro at a central rate of 7.46038 kroner per euro, so exchanging euros carries no risk of a rate jump. Between Danish banks kroner arrive in seconds, and from abroad a transfer takes 1-3 business days.

An account is opened after registration and getting a personal number, a buyer from outside the European Union buys a home with a permit from the Civil Affairs Agency, and in 2026 a gift to children and parents of up to $13,000 (80,600 kroner) is tax-free. Kroner are converted to dollars through European Central Bank rates of 7 October 2026: 7.4745 kroner and $1.1177 per euro, about 6.69 kroner per dollar; amounts are rounded up.

The krone is pegged to the euro: which currency to send

Danmarks Nationalbank has kept the krone at a fixed rate since 1982, first to the German mark and since 1999 to the euro. The central rate is 7.46038 kroner per euro, and the EU exchange rate mechanism allows a band of plus or minus 2.25%, though in practice the rate barely moves beyond tenths of a percent. On 7 October 2026 the European Central Bank set 7.4745 kroner per euro.

For a transfer this means a simple rule: from a euro country it is easy to send euros and change them at a Danish bank, and from other countries to send kroner or dollars, whichever is cheaper to exchange. Savings held in euros on a euro account in Denmark do not lose value when the krone moves. We will suggest the best way to send money to Denmark from your country and which currency to keep savings in after the move.

A personal number and a main account for public payments: where to start in Denmark

When you move to Denmark for more than three months, you register with your municipality's citizen service and get a personal number from the population register. With it comes a digital ID for logging in to the bank and public services, and almost everything in the country - salary, rent, the doctor - starts with this number. Danish banks must open a basic payment account for anyone legally resident in the European Union, and with a personal number the account is opened online.

Every resident of Denmark names a main account for payments from the state: tax refunds, child benefits and holiday pay arrive there. It can be any of your accounts, Danish or foreign; naming it is free, and public bodies only send money to it, never see the balance and never debit anything. A Danish account number has 18 characters, and inside the country it is given as a four-digit branch number and a ten-digit account number. It is best to name the main account before the first payment, so the very first tax refund lands straight on it.

A home in Denmark: a purchase permit and a 0.6% fee

A foreigner from outside the European Union who has lived in Denmark for less than five years buys a home with a permit from the Civil Affairs Agency under the Ministry of Justice. The permit is issued for a specific home you will live in permanently, and the agency later checks that you live there. An EU citizen working in Denmark buys a home to live in by declaration without a permit, and a holiday home by the sea after five years in the country or with a special tie to Denmark: family, work, earlier years of living here.

To register the title the buyer pays $280 (1,850 kroner) plus 0.6% of the price, but not less than 0.6% of the latest official valuation. For a $450,000 (3 million kroner) home the fee comes to $3,000 (19,850 kroner). A manager will suggest how to apply for the permit and by which day to send the purchase money so the seller's bank receives it on the handover day.

A gift to family in Denmark: 80,600 kroner tax-free in 2026

In 2026 children, grandchildren, parents and a partner you have lived with for at least two years receive up to $13,000 (80,600 kroner) a year from one giver tax-free, and a son-in-law or daughter-in-law up to $4,300 (28,200 kroner). The amount above the threshold is taxed at 15%, and gifts between spouses are not taxed at all. A gift within the threshold does not need to be reported to the tax agency.

The threshold applies to each giver separately: mother and father together pass $25,000 (161,200 kroner) a year to a child tax-free. A $30,000 (200,000 kroner) gift from one parent gives a tax of $2,700 (17,910 kroner). A gift from a brother, sister or friend in Denmark counts as the recipient's income and is taxed as income, so such help is better arranged separately.

A transfer to Denmark by tier: up to $10,000, up to $100,000 and more

  • up to $10,000 - the payment purpose and your link to the recipient; for rent the contract with the landlord is enough;
  • $10,000-100,000 - a six-month statement and a document on the source of the money: a sale contract, an income certificate, a gift agreement;
  • from $100,000 - a full source-of-funds file covering several years and the contract the money is going to Denmark for, such as the permit and the home purchase contract.

A Danish bank checks the purpose against the documents at every tier, and a large transfer is also checked by the sender's bank; how to prepare one file for both is covered in proof of source of funds. For $100,000 or more it is easier to handle the transfer as a move of capital - see the capital relocation page. Describe your situation to a manager, and they will choose the order of steps for your amount and sending country.

A Danish tax resident: six months in the country

Full tax liability in Denmark applies to anyone who has a home here and lives in the country for six months or more, including short trips away. A resident pays tax on worldwide income, while moving your own savings is not taxed. From a Danish account to Sweden, Germany and Norway

From Denmark money most often goes to the neighbours: to Sweden and Norway the bank changes kroner into Swedish or Norwegian kronor at its own rate, and to Germany and Finland money leaves in euros. From 9 January 2027 Danish banks will start accepting instant euro transfers, and from 9 July 2027 sending them. Large outgoing transfers are covered in sending large sums abroad.
