How to receive money in Sweden on an account without a personal identity number
A Swedish bank must open a basic payment account for anyone legally resident in the European Economic Area: this right is set out in chapter 4a of the Payment Services Act 2010:751. Transfers from abroad arrive on such an account, and a card is issued for it.
Without a Swedish personal identity number the account works with limited functions: mobile payments by phone number and bank electronic identification are connected only with a personal number. So large sums are better sent once the number has been obtained, and until then the bulk of the money stays where it is now.

By law the bank checks the client: passport, address, the source of the money and the purpose of the account. Moving with a business is described on the Sweden startup visa page.
The sender's country has its own rules for taking money out, and Sweden does not affect them. If a bank in your country does not send a payment to Stockholm directly, ask a manager about a route from your country: a legal path can be found for difficult destinations too.
Euros or kronor: which currency to send to Sweden
A Swedish account is held in kronor by default. If euros or dollars are sent to such an account, the bank exchanges them on crediting at its own rate, and from $10,000 the difference from the market rate is noticeable. Swedish banks also open currency accounts, including in euros: money arrives on them with no exchange and is exchanged into kronor for a specific payment.
From the European Union a euro transfer follows European rules in 1 business day and with a fee as within your own country, while a transfer from other countries goes through correspondent banks, and it is better for the sender to cover its fee in full.

Deposit guarantee in Sweden: 1,150,000 kronor and temporarily up to 5 million
$120,000 (1,150,000 kronor) per depositor at one bank is protected by the Swedish deposit guarantee since 1 January 2026.
For large sums after life events there is temporary protection of up to $500,000 (5 million kronor): it covers money from a home sale and similar events for 12 months and is switched on at the depositor's request with a document on the event.
So money from selling a flat can be kept at one Swedish bank while a new home is being bought, instead of spreading it across several banks for the guarantee.
Buying a flat in Sweden: a 10% down payment since April 2026
90% of a home's price has been covered by a mortgage since 1 April 2026 under Act 2026:226, so you need to transfer a 10% down payment and the registration costs to Sweden.
When buying a freehold house or flat, stamp duty is 1.5% of the price plus $85 (825 kronor), while a share in a housing cooperative, the most common type of flat in Swedish cities, carries no stamp duty.

A Swedish bank checks the down payment money together with the mortgage application: where it comes from and how it got to Sweden. The transfer goes from your own account, and statements along the whole path of the money are gathered in advance. Prices by city are covered in buying a flat in Sweden, and papers for home sale proceeds in moving home sale proceeds abroad.
Saving up the down payment in another country? A manager will advise how to transfer it for the deal and which statements to prepare for the Swedish bank.
Gift and inheritance tax in Sweden
There is no such tax: Sweden abolished gift and inheritance tax in 2005, so money from family arrives in Sweden tax-free at any amount, and no gift return needs to be filed.
Income is taxed. A resident of Sweden pays tax on worldwide income, and renting out your own home is taxed at 30% after a deduction of $4,000 (40,000 kronor) a year and 20% of the rent. A transfer of your own money to Sweden is not treated as income.
The payment purpose states the goal: a gift from parents, a down payment for a flat, a transfer of own savings. Then the recipient's bank sees the purpose straight away and asks for explanations less often.
We will help you send money to Sweden
Mistakes cost more than fees: a large sum sent to an account without a personal number, home sale proceeds with no application for the temporary guarantee, a down payment with no statements along the path of the money, dollars sent to a krona account and exchanged at the bank's rate. We will help you avoid them: we choose a transfer path from your country, prepare source-of-funds documents for the bank and the mortgage and carry out the transfer through licensed partners by the deal date.
Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: the calculation depends on the amount, the country the money comes from and the purpose of the transfer.
