Personal accounts: Sweden

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Sweden is one of the most digital countries in the world: cash is hardly used, and salary, rent, taxes, healthcare and mobile transfers by phone number all run through a bank account and an electronic ID. Banks are supervised by Sweden's Financial Supervisory Authority, and the currency is the Swedish krona. For a foreigner the key is a Swedish number: without a personal identity number or coordination number a bank will hardly open an account.

Personal identity number or coordination number

What the bank checks

  • Passport or ID and a Swedish number.
  • An address in Sweden and a basis for living there: work, study, a residence permit, EU citizen's rights.
  • A questionnaire on the account's purpose, expected receipts and source of funds.
  • Tax residence: foreigners' account details are passed to their countries.
  • For Russian citizens without an EU residence permit, the EU regulation limit: the bank does not accept deposits above €100,000.

How the opening works

  1. Registration in the country and a personal identity number or coordination number from the Tax Agency.
  2. Choosing a bank, booking a meeting and completing the purpose questionnaire.
  3. Account opening, card, then the electronic ID and mobile transfers.

Getting a number takes from a few weeks to a few months, and an account with a number is usually opened within a few days.

Who gets refused

The bank will refuse if the client has no Swedish number or legal basis to live in the country, if the account's purpose and source of money are not documented, or if the client or their money is linked to sanctions. We check whether the bank works with Russian citizens before preparing documents.

What we do
