|---|---|
| Tourist visa | Most banks refuse |
| Needed | Long-term visa or work permit, residence certificate |
| Visit | Mandatory, no remote opening |
| Timeline | Usually on the day of the visit |
| Deposit protection | Up to 1 million baht, ~$30,000 |
| Account notice | Within a month for Russian tax residents |
A personal account in a Thai bank is needed by those living in Thailand: for rent, utilities, salary, card payments and domestic transfers. Since 2025 large banks have noticeably tightened requirements for foreigners because of a rise in fraud with nominee accounts, and accounts are now hardly ever opened on a tourist visa.
Can you open an account in Thailand without residence or a visit
A residence permit in the classic sense is not needed, but a long-term visa is: for retirees, spouses, students, a business visa with a work permit or a long-term resident visa. On a tourist visa or visa-free entry most banks refuse.
An account cannot be opened without a visit: Thai banks open personal accounts for foreigners only at a branch with original documents. Almost everywhere they ask for a residence certificate from the immigration bureau or your country's embassy and a Thai phone number.
We will calculate online the cost of opening a personal account and maintaining it for a year.
Which banks open accounts for non-residents
Banks differ less by name than by which visa they consider sufficient:
| Your status | Odds | What else the bank asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit and business visa | High | Employer letter, address |
| Long-term visa for retirees, spouses, students | High | Residence certificate, lease |
| Long-term resident visa | High | Residence certificate |
| Tourist visa or visa-free entry | Low | Most banks refuse |
Documents for the account
| Document | Purpose | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Passport with a long-term visa | The bank's main condition | Retirement, spouse, student, business or resident visa |
| Residence certificate | Proof of address | Immigration bureau or your country's embassy |
| Thai phone number | Online banking and transfers | Mobile shop |
| Lease or employer letter | Ties to the country | Landlord, employer |
| Proof of the source of money | Foreign currency account | Transfer certificate, contract, income documents |
Timelines and running costs
With a complete file the account, card and online banking are usually issued the same day, and domestic transfers by phone number work right after linking. A foreign currency account is opened separately, with proof of the source of money. Fees vary by bank.
For a retirement visa a foreigner usually keeps at least 800,000 baht, about $24,000, in a Thai account for two months before applying and after renewal, or proves monthly income from 65,000 baht, about $2,000, or a combination. To buy a condominium unit the money is transferred from abroad in foreign currency and the bank issues a transfer certificate: without it the unit will not be registered to a foreigner.
Deposits are protected by the Deposit Protection Agency up to 1 million baht, about $30,000, per depositor in one bank. The bank withholds 15% tax on interest. Anyone spending 180 days a year or more in Thailand is a tax resident: since 2024 a resident's foreign income is taxed when brought into the country, regardless of the year it was earned. Long-term resident visa holders in several categories are exempt from this tax.
The cost of Murblz support depends on the visa and the bank; a manager will calculate it in chat.
The main risk is a visa the bank does not accept
The law does not stop you from opening an account in a Thai bank on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: a visit on a tourist visa that almost always ends in refusal, no residence certificate, a transfer for buying a condo without the bank's certificate so the deal cannot be registered, remitting foreign income without calculating the tax. Murblz support removes these risks: Murblz specialists choose a bank for your visa, help with the residence certificate, prepare documents and accompany the visit. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.

Tax data exchange and account notifications
Thailand takes part in the automatic exchange of tax information: the bank establishes the client's tax residence and passes data on foreigners' accounts to their country of residence.
Russian tax residents notify the tax service of opening a foreign account within one month, separately for each account, and file a report on account flows for the previous year by 1 June. Anyone who spent more than 183 days outside Russia in a calendar year is exempt from both. If the bank's country exchanges tax information with Russia, the report is not filed when no more than 600,000 roubles, about $7,100, came into the account during the year, but the opening notice is still required. How to file is explained in our articles on the foreign account notification and the account flow report.
Common refusals
- A tourist visa or visa-free entry.
- No residence certificate or lease.
- No Thai phone number.
- The account is needed for third-party transfers: banks are especially strict with such clients because of fraud.
- No clear source of money for a foreign currency account.
