Personal accounts: Ukraine

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

A personal account in Ukraine is opened by foreigners living and working in the country, owners of Ukrainian companies and property, and people receiving income or an inheritance in Ukraine. Banks are supervised by the National Bank of Ukraine; the currency is the hryvnia, with an official rate of 44.99 hryvnias per dollar on 5 October 2026. Banking services are largely digital, but for a foreigner the key documents are a tax number and a Ukrainian translation of the passport.

Documents required

  • A passport and a notarised translation into Ukrainian.
  • An individual tax number: without it a bank effectively cannot open an account.
  • A residence permit or other proof of lawful stay if you live in Ukraine.
  • Purpose of the account and source of funds: salary, dividends, sale of property, inheritance.
  • Tax residence: foreigners' account details are passed to their countries under international agreements.

Deposit protection and taxes

Guarantee after thatat least UAH 600,000 per depositor, ~$13,400

The dollar amount is converted at the official National Bank of Ukraine rate of 5 October 2026 and rounded up. The guarantee covers deposits of individuals, including sole traders.

Currency rules

Currency restrictions have applied since February 2022, and the National Bank eases them in packages: the latest took effect on 11 August 2026 and, among other things, raised the limit for paying for housing abroad to UAH 500,000. Transfers abroad and foreign currency withdrawals are subject to limits, so we plan large transactions in advance and check them against the current rules.

How the opening works

  1. Obtaining a tax number from the tax service, through a consulate or under a power of attorney if needed.
  2. Notarised translation of the passport.
  3. Choosing a bank and applying; some banks verify online.
  4. Opening hryvnia and foreign currency accounts, card and mobile banking.

With a tax number and passport translation, an account is usually opened within one to three days.

Who gets refused

The bank will refuse if the client has no tax number, if the purpose of the account and source of money are not documented, or if the client or their money is linked to sanctions. Under martial law Ukrainian banks generally do not serve Russian and Belarusian citizens.
