Personal accounts: UAE

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

A personal account in the UAE is opened at a local bank supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE. The key document for the bank is a residence visa with an Emirates ID: with them you open the account as a resident on standard terms. Without a residence visa some banks open non-resident accounts, but with higher minimum balances and stricter source-of-funds checks.

Personal income tax in the UAE

The UAE has no personal income tax: salaries, deposit interest, personal investment income and income from renting out your own property are not taxed, according to the UAE Federal Tax Authority. Corporate tax applies to an individual only if they run a business in the UAE with turnover above AED 1 million in a calendar year, about $272,300. Then profit up to AED 375,000, about $102,200, is taxed at 0% and the excess at 9%. VAT is 5%.

UAE tax residency for individuals

An account in the UAE does not make you tax resident. Under Cabinet Decision No. 85 of 2022 an individual is a UAE tax resident if at least one condition is met:

  • their usual or primary place of residence and centre of financial and personal interests is in the UAE;
  • 183 days or more in the country in any 12 consecutive months;
  • 90 days or more in 12 consecutive months for UAE and Gulf nationals and residence visa holders who have a permanent home or employment or business in the UAE.

A tax residency certificate is issued by the Federal Tax Authority. Banks in other countries often ask for it so as not to treat you as resident in your former country.

Documents

  • passport and residence visa with Emirates ID;
  • proof of UAE address: tenancy contract or utility bill;
  • employer letter or documents of your own company;
  • source-of-funds evidence for large inflows;
  • for non-residents, statements from a bank in the country of residence and references.

How opening works

  1. Profile assessment. Resident or non-resident, source of money, payment countries.
  2. Choosing a bank for your case and account currency.
  3. Document file and source of funds.
  4. Bank review and answers to its questions.
  5. Account opening, card and online banking.

Why banks refuse

  • No residence visa, and the bank serves residents only.
  • Source of money not proven, especially large sums and crypto income.
  • Payments with sanctioned or higher-risk countries.
  • Address and employment details do not match the documents.
  • The tax residency form names a country where the person does not actually live.

Without residence the bank sets stricter terms

The law does not stop you opening a personal account in the UAE on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fee: without a residence visa and an Emirates identity card a bank opens a non-resident account with a high balance threshold or refuses, large sums without proof of origin stall the review, and payments with sanctioned countries get the account closed. Murblz support removes these risks: we choose a bank for your status, prepare proof of source of funds and handle the bank review until the account opens. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.

The support fee depends on your status and the bank; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
