How to open a bank account in the UAE as a Russian in 2026
With a residence visa an account in the Emirates is a routine procedure; without one the choice of banks is narrow and the check strict. Which banks take clients from Russia, what to prepare, why they refuse and what the whole path costs.
In short
- With a residence visa and Emirates ID almost all banks are open; without them only some, with a high minimum balance.
- Digital banks open an account in minutes, but only for UAE residents.
- A non-resident almost always needs a branch meeting and 6 months of statements.
- A corporate account for a UAE company usually opens in 2-6 weeks.
- Murblz support: a personal account costs $5,000, a corporate one $7,000.
- The main reason Russians are refused is an unproven source of funds.
In detail
An account in the UAE is one of the few ways for a Russian to hold money in dollars and dirhams in a country that has not joined Western sanctions. But in 2026 it is easiest to open for someone with a residence visa and an Emirates ID. A non-resident can use only some banks, with a higher minimum balance and a strict check on the origin of funds.
Below is how a Russian citizen opens a personal and a corporate account in the UAE, what the bank checks, why it refuses, whether it can be done remotely and what the whole path costs. The dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar.
Can a Russian open a bank account in the UAE in 2026
Yes. UAE banks are supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE and are not obliged to apply other countries' sanctions. But most settle in dollars through US correspondent banks, so they check clients from Russia more strictly than usual, and people and companies on sanctions lists are refused almost everywhere.
Your status in the UAE decides your chances and terms more than anything:
| Feature | Resident: visa and Emirates ID | Non-resident: passport only |
|---|---|---|
| Which accounts | Current, savings, deposits, cards | Usually a savings account and deposit, a current account rarely |
| How many banks | Most banks in the country, including digital ones | Some large banks; digital banks are closed |
| Minimum balance | Standard, on the bank's tariff | Noticeably higher than for residents |
| Funds check | Standard | Detailed: statements, a bank reference, source of money |
| Remotely | In digital banks, through the app | A branch meeting is usually required |
So the road to an account most often starts not with a bank but with a residence visa: through a free zone company, employment, a remote work visa or property. Residence options are covered in the UAE in 2026: residence, taxes and cost of living.
A residence visa for the account: the options
The most reliable key to a UAE bank is an Emirates ID. There are several ways to get one, and the choice depends on what you do.
| Ground | Key condition | Cost | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own company | A free zone or mainland licence | from $8,400 with our support | Entrepreneurs who also need a corporate account |
| Remote work visa | Foreign income from $3,500 a month, a contract of at least a year | state fees ~$100, in Dubai a package of ~$290 | Employees of foreign companies |
| Employment | A contract with a UAE company | arranged by the employer | Professionals with a job offer |
| Golden visa for property | Property from 2 million dirhams | from $550,000 invested | Investors who need a 10-year visa |
The remote work visa is issued for a year with renewal, the golden visa for 10 years. With any of them the bank sees you as a resident, not a tourist, and the account becomes a routine procedure.
Which account and currency to open
The dirham has been pegged to the dollar since 1997, so for most purposes a dirham account and a separate dollar account are enough. UAE banks also open accounts in other currencies, including euros.
- Current account - for salary, everyday payments and a card; rarely given to non-residents.
- Savings account - for holding money with a small return; the most common option for a non-resident.
- Deposit - for large sums for a fixed term; the bank fixes the rate at opening.
- Corporate account - only for a company registered in the UAE or abroad with a clear business.
Many UAE banks restrict rouble transfers and settlements with Russian banks, so the way money will come in is planned before the account is opened.
What to do if the bank closes your account
UAE banks may close an account with notice and without giving reasons. Most often this follows a document request the client did not answer, or transactions that did not match the declared profile.
- Find out whether any bank requests are outstanding and answer them on time.
- Get a statement and confirmation of the balance before closure.
- Ask the bank to transfer the balance to your account at another bank.
- When applying to another bank, disclose the previous account honestly: a hidden history comes to light and leads to refusal.
Which UAE banks open accounts
Banks in the Emirates fall roughly into three groups, and for a Russian citizen each has its own rules.
- Large banks with branches - state and private banks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They serve residents and some non-residents, require a branch meeting and check the source of funds in detail.
- Digital banks - open an account in the app within minutes, but only for UAE residents: without an Emirates ID you cannot get in. For example, the country's largest digital banks open personal accounts exclusively for residents.
- Islamic banks - operate under Islamic law, without interest in the usual sense; document requirements are the same.
The bank assesses each client individually: where the money comes from, occupation, expected transfers. So the choice starts with your situation, not a famous name. The bank always decides and need not explain a refusal.
How a resident opens a UAE account: step by step
- Get a residence visa and an Emirates ID. Without them banks treat you as a non-resident.
- Prepare proof of income: a salary certificate or employment contract, your company's documents, statements.
- Prove your UAE address with a lease or a utility bill.
- Apply at a branch or in a digital bank's app.
- Answer questions about funds: where the money comes from, which transfers, from which countries.
- Receive account details and a card. A resident's account opens much faster than a non-resident's.
How a non-resident opens a UAE account, and can it be done remotely
A non-resident can open an account in the UAE, but the choice of banks is narrow and the requirements higher. It is usually a savings account or deposit: banks generally give current accounts with a chequebook only to residents.
- a passport with a UAE entry stamp;
- proof of address abroad - a utility bill or a statement under three months old;
- statements from a bank in your country of residence for the last 6 months;
- a reference letter from your bank;
- documents on the origin of funds and a clear reason why you need an account in the UAE.
A non-resident can almost never open a UAE account fully remotely: the bank wants to see the client in a branch at least once. Opening through an app is a privilege of residents with an Emirates ID. Promises to open a personal account for a non-resident in a day without a visit deserve particular scrutiny: most often it is an account with a payment service, not a UAE bank.
How a non-resident opens a UAE account: step by step
- State the reason for the account. A property purchase, investments, a future move - the bank needs a clear link to the UAE.
- Gather the file in advance: passport, proof of address, 6 months of statements, a bank reference letter, source-of-funds documents.
- Choose a bank that works with non-residents of your profile and book a meeting.
- Come to the UAE and attend the branch meeting with original documents.
- Answer any extra questions from the compliance team by the deadline the bank sets.
- Top up the account to the minimum balance from the account named in the form and receive the details.
The UAE or other countries: where else to open an account
The UAE is not the only option and not always the easiest. In Armenia many banks open an account for a Russian citizen on a passport, and some work remotely, but the check takes up to two weeks, and Armenia already takes part in automatic exchange of tax information. In Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan an account is usually opened in person and with a local tax number.
The logic is the same everywhere: status in the country first, then the bank. A detailed review is in how to open a foreign bank account, and getting a card in a foreign card for Russians.
A corporate account for a free zone company
A company in a UAE free zone is the most common way for an entrepreneur from Russia to get both a residence visa and bank access. But registering a company does not guarantee an account: banks scrutinise businesses with Russian owners and look at real activity.
What the bank checks in a company:
- a valid mainland or free zone licence;
- the charter, the list of shareholders and ultimate owners - the company keeps a register of ultimate owners and files it with the registrar;
- passports, residence visas and Emirates IDs of signatories and main owners;
- an office lease, a business plan, contracts with clients and suppliers;
- the origin of the share capital and first receipts;
- a personal meeting with the signatory at a branch.
Opening a corporate account usually takes 2 to 6 weeks. The clearer the business model and payment geography, the faster the decision. A shell company with no office or contracts is the surest path to refusal. Company registration is covered on company registration in the UAE, and corporate accounts on a business account in the UAE.
The source-of-funds check: what to prepare
For a client from Russia the money question is the main one. The bank wants to see how each large sum was earned and how it reached the account. Suitable evidence:
- tax returns and income statements for recent years;
- contracts for the sale of a business, property or securities;
- statements for the accounts the money passed through, with an explanation of each large transfer;
- inheritance or gift documents with proof of the donor's income;
- your company's charter and accounts if the money is dividends.
If the money moved through several countries and intermediaries, each step is documented. A gap in the chain is the most common reason a bank asks for more papers or refuses without explanation.
Why UAE banks refuse Russians
- No clear source of funds. The money exists, but its origin is not documented.
- Sanctions risk. A link to companies or people on sanctions lists closes almost all banks.
- No link to the UAE. A non-resident without a clear reason for the account is refused more often than a resident.
- A company with no activity. A licence without an office, staff and contracts does not convince the bank.
- Payments to risky countries. Planned transfers to higher-risk countries alarm the compliance team.
- Inaccuracies in the form. The bank reads any mismatch between the form and the documents against you.
How long it takes to open a UAE account
The timeline depends not on the bank but on how ready your file is. UAE residents paid by a local company are fastest; non-residents and companies with Russian owners take longest.
| Situation | What affects the timeline |
|---|---|
| UAE resident, personal account at a digital bank | checks in the app, no branch visit |
| UAE resident, personal account at a large bank | a branch meeting and income check |
| Non-resident, personal account | a branch meeting, a source-of-funds check, extra requests |
| UAE company, corporate account | usually 2 to 6 weeks, a check of the business and owners |
Each extra request from the bank lengthens the wait. That is why source-of-funds documents are prepared before filing, not after the compliance team's first question.
What Russian citizens should know
The UAE has not joined sanctions against Russia, but its banking system is part of the global one: dollar settlements go through correspondent banks in the US, and euro settlements through European banks. So a UAE bank assesses not only you but also the risk to its relationships with those correspondents.
- Money from Russia is checked more deeply: the bank needs to know the funds are not linked to people or companies on sanctions lists.
- Transfers from Russian banks are not accepted at all by some UAE banks, so money is brought in through an account in a third country or as cash declared on entry.
- A second passport or residence in another country helps: the bank sees a client with an international history, not only a Russian resident.
Cash over 60,000 dirhams, about $17,000, brought into the UAE must be declared at customs, and the declaration matters to the bank too: it proves the money entered lawfully.
Dubai or Abu Dhabi: where to open the account
UAE banks operate across the country, and an account opened in Dubai is served in any emirate. The city matters more for the visa and daily life than for the bank.
- Dubai - the most branches and banks working with foreigners, and the widest choice of free zones.
- Abu Dhabi - the capital and a financial centre with large state banks; life is calmer and often cheaper.

How much it costs to open a UAE account
The bank itself usually charges nothing to open an account, but it takes fees for maintenance, the card and falling below the minimum balance under its tariff. The real costs are resident status, documents and time.
| Item | Amount | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Opening the bank account | usually free | maintenance and card on the bank's tariff |
| Minimum balance | on the bank's tariff | noticeably higher for non-residents |
| Residence visa and Emirates ID | depends on the ground | free zone company, employment, remote work visa |
| Translations, apostilles, reference letters | at tariff rates | to prove the source of funds |
| Murblz support: personal account | $5,000 | assessing chances, documents, dialogue with the bank until the decision |
| Murblz support: corporate account | $7,000 | for a company in the UAE |
For a resident the total is usually the visa plus our support; for a non-resident, support plus the sum the bank asks you to keep in the account. A manager will calculate the exact amount for your situation in the chat.
Support costs $5,000, but a bank refusal stays on record
Nobody stops you applying to a UAE bank on your own. But mistakes cost more than any fees: an application without a clear source of funds, a company with no real activity, an inaccuracy in the form, a payment service account instead of a bank. The bank does not explain a refusal, and the next bank will ask about it. Murblz support removes these risks: we assess your chances before filing, choose a bank for your profile, prepare source-of-funds documents and handle the dialogue with the bank until the decision. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.
Support costs $5,000 for a personal account and $7,000 for a corporate one; a manager will calculate the total with the visa and documents in the chat.
Taxes and reporting on a UAE account
The UAE has no personal income tax: salary, deposit interest and personal investment income are not taxed. Corporate tax concerns an individual only if they run a business in the UAE with turnover above 1 million dirhams a year, about $280,000: profit up to 375,000 dirhams, about $110,000, is taxed at 0%, and above that at 9%. VAT is 5%.
The account itself does not create tax residence. You become a UAE resident if your main home and centre of interests are in the country, if you spent 183 days there in 12 months, or 90 days with a residence visa and a permanent home or job in the UAE. More on taxes in the UAE and in tax residency and the 183-day rule.
While you are a Russian tax resident, you must notify the Russian tax office of opening an account in the UAE and report cash flows every year. The UAE takes part in automatic exchange of tax information, but that does not remove your own duty to declare the account.
Where people most often go wrong
- Opening an account before the visa. With a visa and Emirates ID the choice of banks and terms is much better.
- Registering a company for an account without a business. The bank looks at real activity, not the licence.
- Confusing a bank with a payment service. An account with a payment service is not the same as an account at a UAE bank and is protected differently.
- Transferring money without documents. Every large transfer will have to be explained later.
- Forgetting the Russian tax office. Notifying the opening of the account and reporting cash flows is mandatory for a Russian tax resident.
