How to get Thailand citizenship in 5 years after permanent residence in 2026
Thailand has no citizenship by investment. You need five straight years of domicile, income from $2,400 (80,000 baht) a month, three years of tax and spoken Thai.
In short
- No investment route. The Nationality Act B.E. 2508 has no ground for buying citizenship. Money only opens visas and one category of permanent residence.
- The clock starts at permanent residence. Five straight years of domicile run from the residence certificate, so you file after nine years at the earliest.
- Income bar. Official data put it at $2,400 (80,000 baht) a month, or $1,200 (40,000 baht) with ties to Thailand, plus at least three years of tax.
- Thai is required. You must speak it and understand it by ear. Only the narrow groups in Sections 9, 11 and 12 file without this test.
- The Interior Minister decides. Approval is never automatic, and naturalization can be revoked for concealed facts or continued use of a former nationality.
In detail
Thailand has no citizenship by investment: a foreigner can become a Thai citizen only under the Nationality Act B.E. 2508 (1965). The standard route runs through permanent residence: five straight years of domicile, meaning your legal home, counted from the day you receive the residence certificate. You also need a steady occupation, income from $2,400 (80,000 baht) a month, at least three years of tax and spoken Thai. Add the road to permanent residence and you file after nine years at the earliest. The Interior Minister then decides and has no duty to say yes.

Thailand sells long visas, not passports
Section 10 lists five requirements, and investment is not one of them. No fee, fund or purchase replaces the waiting period or the language. Anyone offering a Thai passport for investment is selling something Thai law does not contain.
Money buys two other things. The Privilege program gives a 5- to 20-year visa for a one-time fee from $20,000 (650,000 baht), but it is not permanent residence and its years do not count. The investor category of permanent residence starts at $300,000 (10 million baht) brought in from abroad and invested. It starts the clock and waives nothing in Section 10.
Your clock starts at permanent residence, not at arrival
A decade on a long-stay visa counts as zero of the five years. The Act leaves domicile undefined and the procedure to the minister. The five years run from the day you receive a residence certificate or an alien certificate, or from your entry in the permanent residents' house register, Tor Ror 14. A March 2022 opinion of the Office of the Council of State, No. 376/2565, confirmed the minister's right to set this rule.
The temporary residents' register, Tor Ror 13, does not replace the certificate for an ordinary foreigner. The opinion calls any house register entry the first sign of domicile, yet the proposal to count from Tor Ror 13 came from a foundation, concerned minority groups and left the procedure in place.
Permanent residence itself takes 3 straight years of annual extensions on a non-immigrant visa and a category that fits: investment, a job or your own company, family of a Thai citizen or permanent resident, or recognized expertise. Tourist entries and Privilege do not count, and study, retirement and remote work have no category. Applications open once a year, from 9 March to 3 April in 2026, with a cap of 100 people per country.
Once you hold it, leaving takes a re-entry stamp, good for any number of trips within one year. Without it, or without returning inside that year, the residence certificate lapses and the five straight years go with it.
The wrong visa in year one costs years at the end
These mistakes stay hidden for a long time. A visa that does not count, a gap in extensions, a trip without a re-entry stamp or income without tax surfaces years later and pushes filing back by the same years, and concealed facts can cost you the citizenship after you have it. Murblz starts with your first visa: we pick the basis, run the calendar, check income and tax against the threshold, prepare the documents and handle the filing. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process.
The cost of support depends on your status in Thailand, your family and the time already served; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
The five tests in Section 10
The weight sits in the proof.
| Section 10 asks for | How officials check it |
|---|---|
| Legal adulthood | An adult under Thai law and the law of your nationality. |
| Good conduct | Fingerprints and checks on criminal record, political activity, drugs and national security. |
| A steady occupation | A letter from the foreign labor authority, proof of salary or income from $2,400 (80,000 baht) a month, tax paid for at least 3 years. |
| At least 5 straight years of domicile | A residence or alien certificate and your name in the population register. |
| Knowledge of Thai | You speak Thai and understand it by ear. |
The income bar drops to $1,200 (40,000 baht) a month if you have ties to the country: a Thai spouse, a Thai child or a degree from a Thai university. Foreign income with no occupation in Thailand fails this test: you need the labor authority's letter and three years of tax, so settle your tax residency early.
Official requirements name speaking and listening, not reading or writing. A draft regulation the cabinet approved in January 2022 adds a committee test or a certificate from an accredited Thai school at primary level or above. A new version went to public comment in September 2024 and has not taken effect, but prepare for that test anyway.

The official list runs long: bank deposits, education records for you and all your children, papers from your employer and proof of charitable donations of at least $150 (5,000 baht). Past tax and donations cannot be created after the fact, so the file starts years ahead. You file with the Special Branch police in Bangkok and the provincial police elsewhere.
Who gets a shorter road
Shortcuts depend on family, past nationality or service to the country, never on money.
| Applicant | Section | What falls away | What remains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wife of a Thai citizen | 9 | The standard track: she files separately | 3 years of registered marriage, a name in the house register (Tor Ror 13 or 14), husband's income from $600 (20,000 baht) a month, which hers can top up, a year of tax, four witnesses |
| Husband of a Thai citizen, child or spouse of a person who was naturalized or regained Thai nationality, former Thai citizen | 11 | The five years and the language | Adulthood, conduct, occupation |
| Person with distinguished service to Thailand | 11 | The five years and the language, if the minister finds the service sufficient | Adulthood, conduct, occupation |
| Minor child of an applicant | 12 | Age, occupation, the five years and the language | Domicile in Thailand, conduct, filing together with the parent |
Sections 9, 11 and 12 remove requirements, not the minister's decision. A wife under Section 9 needs no permanent residence: a temporary stay and a Tor Ror 13 entry are enough, and the official review runs 475 days, not 730.
A child of a Thai parent is Thai by birth, wherever the birth takes place. A child of two foreigners is not if either parent was in the country temporarily, on special leniency or without legal entry on the day of birth (Section 7 bis). Tourists and visa holders fall here, and the minister handles exceptions by separate order. If both parents hold permanent residence, a child born in Thailand is Thai by birth (Section 7), unless a parent is a diplomat, consul or international official (Section 8).
A draft amendment open for comment from 22 May to 21 June 2026 touches these children and former citizens and equalizes the wording on spouses. In June it had not reached the cabinet or parliament, so plan by the current text.
In September 2026, after a run of cases involving nominee business owners, an Interior Ministry task force resolved to review the steps and criteria for granting citizenship, audit past approvals and feed the results into amendments to the Act. No new criteria have been announced, but over nine years the rules deserve a yearly check.
Nine years to file, two more to decide
The minimum, with no delays at all:
| Stage | Time | Where it breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Annual visa extensions | 3 straight years | A visa that does not count, or a gap |
| Permanent residence review | 1 to 2 years in practice | One intake a year, so a missed window costs a year |
| Domicile with permanent residence | 5 straight years | A trip without a re-entry stamp |
| Citizenship review | 730 days | Agency checks, the nationality committee, the minister's decision |
With a one-year residence review, that makes 9 years to filing and 11 to the end of the official review. After the minister agrees, the file goes for royal assent, you take an oath of allegiance, and citizenship begins on publication in the Government Gazette.
Official data put the application at $150 (5,000 baht) and the naturalization certificate at $15 (500 baht), the rates of a 1967 regulation still applied in October 2026. The draft regulation raises them to $300 (10,000 baht) and $30 (1,000 baht), and a child's application from $75 (2,500 baht) to $150 (5,000 baht). Budget the higher figure, $330 (11,000 baht) per adult. The big fees come earlier, at permanent residence: $230 (7,600 baht) to apply and $5,700 (191,400 baht) on approval.
A nationality committee of ministries, police and intelligence services advises the minister, who must weigh its view but decides alone. In 2003 the Constitutional Court described granting citizenship to a particular foreigner as state policy and a sovereign right. A complete file can still be refused.

Your old passport, and how to lose the new one
Section 10 does not ask you to give up your existing nationality. Section 19, however, lets the minister revoke naturalization where evidence shows you still use your former nationality, so settle the second passport before filing, not after the oath. Your first country applies its own rules: check them early and see our guide to dual citizenship.
Other grounds in Section 19:
- concealed facts or false statements in the application;
- acts against national security, insults to the nation, or breaches of public order and morals;
- more than five years abroad without a domicile in Thailand;
- keeping the nationality of a country at war with Thailand.
Revocation can extend to a minor child naturalized with the parent. Such a child keeping another nationality must renounce Thai nationality within a year of turning 20 (Section 14). A Thai citizen who naturalizes elsewhere loses Thai nationality (Section 22).
Where mistakes cost years, and how Murblz helps
You can try this route on your own: the law and the requirements are public. Going with professionals is safer because an error here costs years rather than a fee. Permanent residence or a long-stay visa, such as those open to retirees, is enough for living in Thailand. Citizenship adds the right to own land and, five years after naturalization, the vote.
Murblz runs this as a clear, transparent process from the first visa to the filing: the right category, a calendar of extensions and re-entry stamps, an income and tax check three years ahead, translated documents, language preparation and an early look at your former nationality.
The decision stays with the minister, and no adviser can change that. Our job is to get your file there without the avoidable errors. The cost is available on request from a manager.
