Thailand visa for remote workers
A 5-year multiple-entry visa for remote workers and freelancers: up to 180 days per entry with a further 180-day extension, no income threshold but 500,000 baht in savings.

Since July 2024 Thailand has issued remote workers a long-stay visa: it is valid for 5 years, and each entry allows up to 180 days with a possible further 180-day extension. There is no minimum income; instead you show 500,000 baht in the account. This page previously described a separate 10-year programme for wealthy professionals, which is not a nomad visa.
What this visa is
The long-stay visa appeared in July 2024. It is multiple-entry and valid for 5 years: each entry allows up to 180 days, and the stay can be extended once for another 180 days at immigration. It is issued to remote employees of foreign companies and freelancers, as well as participants in cultural programmes such as Thai boxing or Thai cooking courses and those travelling for medical treatment. It does not allow work for Thai companies or clients.
Requirements
| Requirement | How to meet it |
|---|---|
| Funds in the account | from 500,000 baht, ~$14,840, in the account over the last 3 months |
| Remote work | an employment contract with a foreign company or contracts with foreign clients |
| Passport | valid for at least 6 months |
| Filing | through the electronic visa system of a Thai embassy outside Thailand |
There is no minimum income: instead the consulate checks the balance and whether the remote work is real. Baht are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026 and rounded up.
We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.
What it costs
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa fee | 10,000 baht, ~$297, for the applicant and each family member |
| 180-day extension in Thailand | 1,900 baht, ~$57 |
| Health insurance | at the insurer's rate, recommended for the whole term |
| One-bedroom flat in the centre | ~$400 a month |
| Our support | calculated by a consultant in the chat |
Living costs for one person excluding rent are about $600 a month, for a family of four about $2,100.
Documents
- A passport valid for at least 6 months and a photo.
- A bank statement showing at least 500,000 baht over the last 3 months.
- Proof of remote work: an employment contract, an employer letter, client contracts, a portfolio for freelancers.
- Proof of address in the country where you apply, such as a lease or a utility bill.
- For family members, marriage and children's birth certificates.
How to prove remote work
Employees show an employment contract with a foreign company and an employer letter stating that the work is remote. Freelancers attach client contracts, invoices, a portfolio and, if they have one, documents of their company abroad. The embassy checks that the work is real and unrelated to Thailand, so all documents must tell the same story: who you are, whom you work for and where the money comes from.
Funds in the account: what the embassy looks at
The balance must be at least 500,000 baht or the equivalent in another currency throughout the last 3 months, not just on the filing day. The applicant's personal account usually works; a one-off top-up shortly before filing raises questions. If the amount is close to the threshold, we leave a margin for exchange rate swings so the equivalent does not fall below 500,000 baht.
Where to apply
The application is filed through the electronic visa system of the Thai embassy or consulate in the country where you live, with proof of address there. You cannot apply for this visa from inside Thailand. If you do not live in your country of citizenship, you will need documents on your lawful stay in the country of filing.
Step by step
- Checking the account balance and remote work documents.
- An electronic application to the Thai embassy in the country where you live, and payment of the 10,000 baht fee.
- Review, usually 1-3 weeks.
- Entry to Thailand: up to 180 days per entry.
- Extension for another 180 days at immigration for 1,900 baht, or leaving and re-entering within the visa's 5-year validity.
Taxes
Anyone spending 180 days or more in Thailand in a calendar year becomes tax resident, whatever the visa type. Since 2024 a resident pays tax not only on Thai income but also on foreign income brought into the country if it was earned on or after 1 January 2024; money earned earlier can be brought in tax-free with supporting evidence. Rates range from 0% on the first 150,000 baht to 35% on income above 5 million baht. An exemption for remitted income is being discussed, but in 2026 it is not yet law, so we plan money flows in advance.
Why applications are refused
- Less than 500,000 baht in the account, or the money appeared shortly before filing.
- Remote work is not backed by contracts or an employer letter.
- The employer or clients are in Thailand.
- The application was filed at an embassy outside your country of residence or without proof of address.
- Previous overstays in Thailand.
- Documents contradict each other: contract amounts do not match the statements.
Family
A spouse and unmarried children under 20 can receive the visa as family members, with a fee of 10,000 baht each. Marriage and birth certificates are required, while the main applicant shows the account balance and remote work documents. Family members may not work on their visa. Children usually attend international schools in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket, and places are best booked in advance.
Where to live
Bangkok suits those who need a big city, international schools and clinics. Chiang Mai is a favourite of remote workers: cheaper and calmer, though smoky in the dry season. Phuket, Samui and Phangan are chosen for the sea, with higher prices. The city affects the budget more than the visa itself. Before a long lease it is worth living in the area for a month: it is easier to judge noise, the commute to a coworking space and internet quality.
What changes in 2026
The visa terms in 2026 are unchanged: 5 years, 500,000 baht in the account and a 10,000 baht fee. The main topic of the year is tax on remitted foreign income: the promised exemption has not been adopted yet, so residents need to think through when and which money to transfer to Thailand.
Who it suits and who it does not
The visa suits remote employees and freelancers who want to live in Thailand for long periods without border runs but are not ready to show high income: 500,000 baht in the account is enough. It does not suit those who want to work for Thai companies or open a business in Thailand, or those needing permanent status: the visa does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship.
How this visa differs from others
Visa-free entry allows only a limited stay in Thailand and gives no right to remote work. Thailand's long-term card gives 5 to 20 years for a one-off fee from $19,350 but costs more. The 10-year visa for wealthy professionals requires high income. The long-stay visa is the middle ground: 5 years for a 10,000 baht fee and 500,000 baht in the account.
Extensions and exits
Each entry allows up to 180 days, and once per entry the stay can be extended for another 180 days at immigration for 1,900 baht. After that you must leave, and then you can re-enter on the same visa while it remains valid. Overstaying costs 500 baht per day and can end in an entry ban, so we plan exit dates in advance and send reminders a few weeks ahead.
Bank, housing and healthcare
Opening a Thai bank account on this visa is possible, but banks often ask for extra documents such as proof of address. Condominium flats are usually let for a year with a deposit of two months' rent. Private clinics in Bangkok and Phuket are good but expensive, so insurance for the whole term is a must in practice, even if the consulate does not require it.
