Thailand is one of the most popular places to retire: a warm climate, inexpensive food, good private hospitals and a large Russian-speaking community on the coast. There is a dedicated visa for retirees: it is granted from age 50 to those who keep 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account, about $23,750, or receive a pension from 65,000 baht a month, about $1,930. The visa is issued for a year and renewed in the country any number of times while the conditions are met.
Since 15 September 2026 Russian citizens can stay in Thailand without a visa for only 30 days, so the retirement visa has become the main route for living there. It does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship, and you cannot work on it. Wealthy retirees with a high pension income can also use the 10-year long-term resident status, under which foreign income is tax-free.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.
Who can get residence as a retiree
The retirement visa is granted to foreigners from age 50 regardless of nationality. You cannot work on it, either employed or self-employed, but you can live in the country all year, travel and leave with a re-entry permit. A spouse under 50 receives a visa as a family member.
- recipients of a pension in Russia or another country of at least 65,000 baht a month;
- people from 50 without a large pension but with savings: 800,000 baht kept in a Thai bank account;
- couples where one spouse's pension is below the threshold and the shortfall is covered by money in the account;
- wealthy retirees for whom the 10-year long-term resident status with tax-free foreign income is more advantageous.
Documents and how to prove a Russian pension
- a passport valid for at least 18 months for a consular visa;
- a certificate of the awarded pension from the Social Fund of Russia with the amount, on paper with a stamp, apostilled and translated into English;
- bank statements showing pension credits over recent months;
- a police certificate and a medical certificate on the absence of prohibited diseases, for a consular visa;
- health insurance from 3,000,000 baht, for a consular visa;
- for an in-country extension, a letter from a Thai bank on the account balance and a passbook statement;
- proof of an address registered with immigration, an application form and photos;
- for a spouse, a marriage certificate with an apostille and translation.
In Thailand it is easier to prove income with money in the account than with a pension: transfers from Russian banks to Thai banks are currently restricted, and a pension certificate has to be issued anew every year. The 800,000 baht must sit in a Thai account for at least 2 months before applying, and after the extension the balance must stay for another 3 months and not fall below 400,000 baht, about $11,880, until the next extension.
You can keep receiving your pension in Russia. The Social Fund periodically asks for proof that the recipient is alive: this is done through a consulate or by video call where available.
Health insurance
The retirement visa issued by a consulate before the trip requires health insurance covering at least 3,000,000 baht, about $89,050, for the whole visa term. Policies from Thai insurers and foreign policies covering treatment in Thailand are accepted. Extensions of a visa obtained by a change of status in the country usually do not require insurance.
Retiring in Thailand without insurance is risky: private hospitals are good but expensive, and after 70 a new policy is noticeably harder and more expensive to obtain. It is best to buy a policy in advance while your age allows.
Tax on your pension and the treaty with Russia
You become a Thai tax resident after 180 days in a year. Since 2024 a resident pays tax on foreign income if it is brought into the country in the same year or later and was earned from 2024 onwards; the rate is 0% to 35% on the scale. Money earned before 2024 is brought in tax-free, so it pays to transfer savings from previous years first.
A Russian state pension is not taxed in Russia. Russia and Thailand have a double taxation treaty in force: tax withheld in one country is credited in the other. More on the page about taxes in Thailand.
Monthly budget for a couple
| Monthly item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Condominium flat in Chiang Mai | 15,000 baht |
| Utilities and air conditioning | 3,000 baht |
| Groceries and cafés for two | 18,000 baht |
| Transport, taxis and scooter rental | 4,000 baht |

| Total for a couple | from 47,000 baht, ~$1,400 |
In Pattaya and Phuket one person spends 40,000-70,000 baht a month, Bangkok is more expensive, and insurance for two over 60 should be budgeted separately as its price depends on age. Our consultant in the chat will calculate the budget for your city, home and family.
Support up to the visa and the first renewal
Retirees in Thailand are refused more often because of timing than because of the amount: the money sat in the account for less than 2 months, the balance fell below the threshold after the extension, the address was not registered. We choose the route for your age and income, prepare certificates and insurance, open a Thai bank account and run the calendar of renewals and reports. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first application.
Our consultant in the chat will calculate the cost of support.
Where retirees settle
Most retirees from Russia live by the sea. Pattaya is a large city with hospitals, shops and Russian-speaking services an hour from Bangkok airport. Phuket is an island with beaches and good private clinics, but rents are higher and the rainy season can be damp. Hua Hin is chosen by those who want a calm resort town with a royal residence and golf courses.
Chiang Mai in the north is the most affordable large city to live in, with a cool winter and strong healthcare, but from February to April it suffers from haze caused by field burning. Bangkok suits those who value the best hospitals and direct flights.
Steps and timelines
| Step | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Checking age, money and documents, choosing a city | 1-2 weeks |
| Certificates, apostilles, translations, insurance | 3-6 weeks |
| A visa at a consulate or entry and change of status at immigration | from a few days to a few weeks |
| A Thai bank account with 800,000 baht in it | at least 2 months before the extension |
| One-year extension at immigration | on the day or within a few weeks |
| Address report | every 90 days |
| Next extension | every year, in advance, before expiry |
A change of status costs about 2,000 baht, about $60, a one-year extension 1,900 baht, about $57, and a re-entry permit from 1,000 baht. A convenient sequence: enter, change status to retirement, open an account, deposit the money and extend the visa for a year after 2 months.
Common reasons for refusal
- the money sat in the Thai account for less than 2 months before applying;
- after the extension the balance fell below 400,000 baht or was withdrawn before 3 months;
- no 3,000,000 baht insurance for a consular visa;
- the address is not registered with immigration, or 90-day reports were missed;
- the extension was filed after the visa expired;
- signs of working in Thailand without a permit.
