How to send money to Belize in 2026: a 2 to 1 rate, registering an investment and $2,000 a month for retirees

5 min read ·

In 2026 Belize gives retirees a status for a regular transfer from $2,000 a month, and their income from abroad is not taxed by the country. Foreigners buy land and homes on equal terms with citizens, pay 8% stamp duty, and send deal proceeds back abroad through the investment record at the central bank.

Want to send a transfer to Belize right now? A manager will suggest the best terms. Work out the transfer cost

Belize grants resident status for a regular transfer: a retiree with income from $2,000 a month sends this money to a local bank, and their income from abroad is not taxed by the country. A bank transfer takes 1-3 business days at a rate that has not changed for almost 50 years, 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar. Foreigners buy land and homes on equal terms with citizens, and an investment recorded at the central bank can later be freely sent back out.

A record at the central bank opens the way back

Belize has an exchange control law, and for a foreign buyer it means one rule: money for land, a home or a share in a business comes from abroad in foreign currency, and the central bank registers the investment. With this record, sale proceeds, rental income and dividends are converted back into US dollars and sent abroad. The registration is handled by the recipient's bank or the deal lawyer; the sender just needs to give the exact payment purpose.

A foreigner buys property on the same terms as a citizen, including land as full owner. The main mandatory payment is 8% stamp duty on the value above $10,000 (20,000 Belize dollars), 4-10 weeks pass from contract to registration, and there is no capital gains tax on a sale. So the transfer is split into two payments: the price to the seller through the lawyer's account, and the duty as a separate amount by registration. A selection of homes on the coast and the islands is on the property in Belize page. To send the price and the duty without extra exchanges, we will suggest the best way to send.

The retiree programme: transfers as the condition

The Qualified Retired Persons programme is a rare case where a regular transfer in itself gives a status. Income from a pension or investments of at least $2,000 a month or $24,000 a year is needed, and this money is transferred to a Belizean bank every year. A participant spends at least 30 consecutive days a year in the country, brings in personal belongings duty-free, and income from abroad is not taxed by Belize.

The most convenient option is a standing transfer: $2,000 once a month or $24,000 once a year in one amount with a clear payment purpose. The statement from the bank in Belize then serves as proof for the programme's annual check. If the pension arrives in euros, the exchange into US dollars is better done before sending. A manager will help set up a regular transfer for the programme.

A transfer to Belize from $10,000: what to prepare in advance

Data for 2026.

AmountWhat the bank will askHow to confirm
up to $10,000the recipient and the payment purposethe purpose is usually enough
$10,000-100,000the source of the money and the purpose of the investmentstatements for 3-6 months, a contract, an income certificate
from $100,000the path of the money from its original source and registration of the investmenta contract for the sale of a business or a flat, an inheritance, dividends, tax returns

The larger the investment, the more important it is that the documents on the source of the money and the payment purpose match: the central bank registers the investment on their basis, and this is the foundation for sending it back out later. Is the sender's bank slowing down a large transfer? There are options for this case too: a manager will tell you about them. The procedure for large transfers is on the capital relocation page. A company or a trust in Belize is covered on the company in Belize and trust in Belize pages.

Belize and its Central American neighbours

Belize borders Mexico and Guatemala, and residents of the north often keep expenses in two currencies: US dollars in an account in Belize are exchanged into pesos or quetzales at a bank in the neighbouring country when a purchase or medical treatment has to be paid for. Money from selling a home in Belize often goes onward to Panama or to the Cayman Islands.

Sending money to neighbouring countries

  • Mexico - the national currency is the Mexican peso
  • Guatemala - money arrives in quetzales or US dollars
  • Honduras - the national currency is the lempira
  • Costa Rica - accounts are kept in colones and US dollars
  • Panama - the US dollar in circulation
  • El Salvador - the US dollar, transfers in seconds

All countries for capital and the procedure for a large transfer are on the capital relocation page.
