Argentina is one of the few countries where a retiree can get residence with a pension of about $1,300 a month and apply for citizenship after 2 years in the country. The threshold is tied to the minimum wage: five minimum wages a month, rising with it until April 2027. Income is counted in pesos, so if the peso weakens the dollar threshold can even fall.
The catch is elsewhere: processing takes 3-5 months, you cannot leave before getting the card, and Argentina taxes residents on worldwide income. Below is who qualifies, how to prove a Russian pension, what life costs and the steps of the move.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.
Who can get residence as a retiree
The pensioner ground suits those receiving a pension granted in another country of at least five Argentine minimum wages a month. Age is not checked separately: what matters is the pension itself and regular payments. If the pension falls short, the rentista ground fits: income from abroad of the same amount from rent, interest or dividends.
The pensioner permit is temporary and renewable. Time on it counts towards the 2 years in the country, after which you can apply for citizenship through a federal court. Argentina does not require giving up your previous citizenship.
- recipients of an old-age or long-service pension granted in Russia or another country;
- couples where the pension covers the main applicant's threshold;
- a spouse and children on the family ground, children under 18 without a fee;
- if the pension is below the threshold, the rentista ground with other income from abroad.
Documents and how to prove a Russian pension
- passport and proof of legal entry;
- birth certificate with an apostille and Spanish translation;
- police certificates from every country where you lived in the past 3 years, apostilled and translated;
- an Argentine police certificate, requested within the filing system itself;
- a Social Fund of Russia pension certificate with the amount, apostilled;
- statements of pension credits for recent months;
- proof of address in Argentina.
Translations are made by a sworn translator registered in Argentina and certified by the translators' association: a translation made in Russia is not accepted. The pension certificate must be a paper document with a stamp; an electronic statement cannot be apostilled.
You can keep receiving the pension on a Russian card, but for renewal the credits must be visible in statements. A bank account in Argentina is opened after you get a tax number and a foreigner ID.
Health insurance
There is no mandatory insurance for the pensioner permit. Public hospitals serve residents, but queues are long. Most foreigners choose private prepaid medicine: a monthly fee gives access to a network of clinics and doctors.
Fees are higher for older people, so the plan is chosen before moving. Private clinics in Buenos Aires are of good quality; choice is narrower in the provinces.
Tax on your pension and the treaty with Russia
You become an Argentine tax resident after 12 months of living in the country on a residence permit. A resident pays income tax on worldwide income on a progressive scale, plus a wealth tax if assets exceed a threshold of about $260,000. Murblz specialists calculate how a Russian pension is taxed under the Russia-Argentina double tax treaty before the move.
Russia does not tax its state pension. More on rates and thresholds in taxes in Argentina.
Monthly budget for a couple
| Monthly item | Amount |
|---|---|
| One-bedroom flat in Palermo or central Buenos Aires | $650-850 |
| One-bedroom in convenient areas further out | from $450 |
| 2-3 bedroom flat in Belgrano or Recoleta | $1,000-1,400 |
| Private prepaid medicine | depends on age, extra |
| Family of four without rent | $2,800-3,200 |
Rent is often quoted in dollars, and leases run for a year or more. Restaurants, taxis and services are cheap for those with dollar income, while electronics and imported goods are expensive. A consultant will calculate a budget for your area and family in the chat.
Support up to the card and the passport
Retirees in Argentina are refused or delayed not because of the amount but because of paperwork: a pension certificate without an apostille, a translation not by a sworn translator, police certificates missing for some countries over 3 years, an expired provisional permit during review. We check the pension and documents before filing, handle the migration application and prepare the citizenship case after 2 years.

Where retirees settle
Most foreigners live in Buenos Aires: Palermo has green streets and cafés, Belgrano and Recoleta are quiet areas with good clinics. Retirees value the theatres, parks and European pace of life.
Mendoza by the Andes attracts with wineries and a dry sunny climate, Córdoba is the second-largest city with universities and moderate prices. Bariloche and the southern lake district suit nature lovers, but winters are cold and large hospitals far away.
The climate depends on the region: Buenos Aires has humid hot summers and cool winters without snow, the north is warm all year and Patagonia is cold and windy. Seasons are reversed: summer runs from December to February.
Steps and timelines
| Step | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Checking the pension and documents | 1-2 weeks |
| Certificates, apostilles, sworn translations | 1-2 months |
| Online filing in the migration system and an in-person appointment | after entry |
| Provisional permit during review | usually up to 90 days, renewable |
| Decision and card | 3-5 months, the card about 4 months |
| Renewal | before expiry |
| Citizenship application through the court | after 2 years in the country |
Until you have the card you may not leave Argentina, so trips home are planned after receiving it. With the card you can travel freely to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Common reasons for refusal
- a pension below five minimum wages or not visible in statements;
- foreign documents without an apostille or sworn translation;
- police certificates missing for some countries over 3 years;
- the system does not see a legal entry into the country;
- an expired provisional permit during review.
Cases are more often delayed than refused: the migration service requests a missing document. Each request adds months, so the file is checked before filing.
