Personal accounts: Tajikistan

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

The calculation indicator in 2026

Almost all amounts in Tajik law, from fees and fines to tax allowances, are tied to the calculation indicator. It is set by the state budget law: 78 somoni for 2026, up from 75 in 2025. At the National Bank rate of 9.23 somoni to the dollar, one indicator is about $8.50.

How well deposits are protected

Personal deposits are insured by the Savings Insurance Fund up to 35,000 somoni, about $3,800, per depositor per bank. All accounts at one bank are added together, interest is not compensated, and foreign currency deposits are repaid in somoni at the National Bank rate on the day of the insured event. Large sums are best split between banks.

How opening the account works

  • Passport and migration documents, a notarised translation if needed.
  • Proof of address and source of funds for large inflows.
  • A branch visit; cards are issued in somoni, dollars and other currencies.

Taxes for an account holder

IncomeRate in 2026
A resident's salary at the main workplace, above the 156 somoni monthly allowance12%
Other resident income: fees, rent, property sales15%
A non-resident's salary from Tajik sources20%
Dividends from Tajik companies12% at source

A tax resident is someone who spends more than 183 days a year in Tajikistan. A Tajik citizen remains resident however many years they live abroad.

Why a bank may refuse

  • No migration registration, or the permitted stay is running out.
  • Unclear source of funds for large inflows.
  • Payments linked to sanctioned persons or countries.

How to hold a large sum

Deposit insurance is counted separately at each bank, so a sum above 35,000 somoni is best split between several banks. Foreign currency deposits are repaid in somoni in an insured event, so the currency risk stays with the depositor. For large transfers from abroad the bank will ask for a contract, statement or other proof of where the money came from.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Tajikistan?
Yes, a foreigner can usually open an account with a passport during a personal visit, and some banks also ask for a migration card or local registration. The practical value of such an account for international use is low.
Do Tajik bank cards work abroad?
Cards on international schemes are issued, but limits, fees and reliability outside the country are patchy. Taking one as your only means of payment when travelling is a risk.
Are there limits on moving currency out of Tajikistan?
Yes. Buying and transferring foreign currency is regulated, and the bank asks for proof of source of funds and the purpose of the payment. Larger outbound transfers get extra scrutiny and are not always quick.
Is Tajikistan part of CRS?
In 2026 the country is not among the jurisdictions doing automatic exchange under CRS. That does not make the account invisible - you still have to declare foreign accounts where you are tax resident, and the list of participating countries keeps growing.
