Tajikistan citizenship in 2026: how to get it

The short answer: Tajik citizenship is obtained by birth to a citizen parent or by admission after 5 years of permanent residence in the country, with knowledge of Tajik and a lawful income. Tajikistan recognises dual citizenship only under international treaties, and there is such a treaty with Russia: a Russian citizen does not have to give up the Russian passport. How to get Tajik citizenship

In the country the application goes to the passport and registration service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the decision on admission is made by the president. Tajikistan has no citizenship or residence by real estate purchase.

How to get residence before citizenship

The 5 years are counted from permanent residence, so you first need a status in the country. The main routes:

• Employment. A work and residence permit through an employer within the quotas for foreign workers.
• Family. A residence permit through marriage to a Tajik citizen or to join close relatives.
• Own business. A company and a residence permit for its owner. Company registration is free and by law takes 24 hours, with minimum capital of 500 somoni, about $55.

Dual citizenship: the 1995 treaty

Tajikistan's constitution does not recognise its citizens' citizenship of another state except as provided by law and international treaties. The treaty between Russia and Tajikistan on dual citizenship was signed on 7 September 1995 and ratified in 1996. It remains in force in 2026, although in 2025 members of the State Duma proposed denouncing it.

• What the treaty gives. A citizen of one country can acquire the other's citizenship without losing the first.
• Army. A person with both citizenships under the treaty serves in the army of the country where they permanently live.
• Notification. A Russian citizen notifies the Interior Ministry of a second citizenship within 60 days.
• Citizens of other countries. Without such a treaty, previous citizenship must be given up on admission to Tajik citizenship.

Which documents are needed for admission to citizenship

• an application for admission to citizenship and photos;
• a passport and the residence permit on which the 5 years are counted;
• proof of lawful income: an employer's certificate, documents on your own business or bank statements;
• a police certificate;
• proof of knowledge of Tajik;
• for citizens of countries other than Russia, a document on renouncing or losing the previous citizenship.
