In detail
Money is sent to Bosnia and Herzegovina in euros or convertible marks to an account at a bank in Sarajevo, Banja Luka or Mostar. Since 1998 the mark has been firmly pegged to the euro: 1 euro always costs 1.95583 marks, so a sum in euros loses nothing on the rate. The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina works as a currency board: every mark issued is backed by euro reserves, and the rate is fixed by law. Banks keep accounts in both euros and marks, so a large sum is conveniently held in euros and changed in portions for spending with no rate risk.
A bank exchanges US dollars into marks at the market rate: it follows the dollar's movement against the euro. Which currency to choose for your amount and purpose, a manager will advise.

The mark rate is the same in Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Mostar: there is one central bank for the whole country, even though its two parts have their own governments and their own taxes.
The single euro payments area: application filed on 6 August 2026
For now the country is not part of the single euro payments area, so euros from Germany, Austria or Croatia travel as an international transfer through a correspondent bank. The sender needs the recipient's 20-character account number, the bank code and the full name, and the payment arrives in 1-2 business days.
On 6 August 2026 the central bank filed an official application to join: before that both parts of the country adopted new payments laws. The area's countries account for more than 80% of Bosnia and Herzegovina's foreign trade. The central bank expects the first payments under the single rules no earlier than six months after admission, and until then the ordinary international transfer applies.
Deposits up to 70,000 marks are insured at each bank
The Deposit Insurance Agency repays up to 70,000 marks ($41,000) per depositor at each bank, a limit in force since 1 November 2022. All of a person's accounts at one bank are added together, foreign-currency deposits are converted into marks at the central bank rate, and the payout is made within 20 business days.
That is why money for a flat is sent closer to the date of the deal rather than kept for months on one account.
We will help you send money to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mistakes cost more than fees: dollars changed first into euros and then into marks, euros sent without the recipient's full name and 20-character account number, paying for a flat without the canton's tax, and a large sum with no papers on its origin. We will help you avoid them: we choose the transfer route and currency, gather source-of-funds documents for the bank in Sarajevo or Banja Luka and carry out the transfer through licensed partners until the money is credited.
Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: much depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer.
A flat in Sarajevo or Banja Luka: the tax depends on the part of the country
A foreigner buys a home on the basis of reciprocity. In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina the property transfer tax is set by the canton, and in Sarajevo Canton it is 5% of the assessed value, while Republika Srpska and Brčko District have no such tax. Prices, taxes and the deal procedure are covered in buying an apartment in Bosnia.

The capital is described on the Sarajevo page, and the country's taxes on the taxes in Bosnia and Herzegovina page.
The amount you send to Bosnia and Herzegovina sets the documents

From Sarajevo to Croatia, Serbia and Germany
To neighbouring Croatia money goes in euros and is credited there with no exchange. To Serbia people send euros, and the recipient's bank changes them into dinars if needed. Those working in Germany and Austria send money home in euros, and the return transfer follows the same route.
