How to send money to Botswana in 2026: in pula, to a foreign-currency account and as a large sum

5 min read ·

Money reaches Botswana by bank transfer in 1-3 business days: to a pula account at the bank's rate or to a foreign-currency account in dollars, euros and rand. The country has had no currency controls since 1999, so a large sum needs no central bank permission. From $10,000 a bank in Gaborone asks for a statement and a contract.

Money to Botswana: methods, currency and timing in 2026

Methods checked on 9 October 2026. Money reaches Botswana by bank transfer in pula or to a foreign-currency account in 1-3 business days, and the rate on that date was 14.02 pula per US dollar. The country has had no currency controls since 1999, so a large sum goes through without central bank permission, with the recipient bank's ordinary check.

Is the sender's bank slow with a payment to Gaborone? There are usually more options than it seems: a manager will look at your case and suggest a route for the amount.

No currency controls in Botswana since 1999: what it means for a transfer

On 9 February 1999 Botswana abolished the last currency control rules: from 1995 they were lifted step by step, first for current payments, then for capital movements. Since then money is brought in and taken out without central bank permission, and the government charges no levies on capital movements. Only banks and companies licensed by the central bank may buy and sell currency as a business, so a transfer goes through a bank or a licensed transfer company.

The recipient's bank asks you to fill in a short payment form: it is needed for balance of payments statistics and the ordinary client check. A foreigner who lives or works in Botswana counts as a resident for the bank, so an account is opened for them on the general terms, and non-residents freely own shares in companies on the local stock exchange.

A large sum is sent to Botswana in one payment: no permission is needed, and the bank needs a clear document on the purpose. For the money to go through first time, we will advise how best to send it for your task. The capital is described on the Gaborone page.

Mistakes cost more than fees: exchanging the whole reserve into pula, which slides against the basket, a double conversion through the rand, a large payment with no document on the purpose that the bank asks you to explain. We will help you avoid them: we choose the route and timing, prepare source-of-funds documents for the bank and carry out the transfer until the money is credited.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: the price depends on the amount and the purpose of the transfer.

The pula and the currency basket: when it pays to send money to Botswana

50% rand and 50% IMF special drawing rights - that is the mix behind the pula, pegged to a basket since 2005. The peg is a crawling one: since 2025 the pula has been sliding against the basket by 2.76% a year, and the Ministry of Finance reviews the parameters twice a year.

In practice the rate against the rand and the dollar changes slowly and predictably: in the 12 months to August 2026 the pula lost 7.2% against the rand, and in the year to January 2026, while losing 7% against the rand, it gained 2.8% against IMF currencies. That is why a reserve is conveniently held on a foreign-currency account, and only the part to be spent in the coming months is changed into pula.

For rent, study and family expenses the sum is counted in pula, and for buying a home or investing in a company in dollars. If the sum is large and the rate matters, a specialist will advise how to split it into parts by date.

What a bank in Gaborone will ask for different amounts

  • Up to $10,000. The bank checks the name, the account number and the purpose: family support, study, rent.
  • $10,000-100,000. You need the sender's account statement and a contract: a lease, an employment contract, a supply contract.
  • From $100,000. The bank looks into the source of the money and the deal contract, and for an investment in a company its registration documents. Here a manager will help prepare the pack.

How to prove the origin of money is covered in proof of source of funds, a large transfer in sending large sums abroad, and sending the proceeds of a home sale in moving home sale proceeds abroad. Moving with capital is on the capital relocation page.
