In detail

Money is sent to Eswatini to an account at a bank in Eswatini: from abroad a transfer takes 1-3 business days, and the recipient gives the account number, the bank and the name. The lilangeni is always equal to the South African rand, so from South Africa people pay in rand with no exchange, and on 7 October 2026 a dollar cost 16.6138 emalangeni. Within the country, money has moved through the fast payment system since December 2024.

The lilangeni equals the rand: what the dollar cost over the year

Since 1992 Eswatini, South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia have formed a common rand monetary area, and the lilangeni is exchanged for the rand one to one. So the lilangeni's rate to the dollar matches the rand's:

DateEmalangeni per dollar
7 October 202517.2065
2 January 202616.5350
1 October 202616.6068
7 October 202616.6138

South African Reserve Bank rates; on 7 October 2026 a euro cost 18.5941 emalangeni. Over the year the dollar fell against the lilangeni by 3.4%: $1,000 used to give 17,207 emalangeni, and now gives 16,614. A sender paying in rand does not need the rate at all: 10,000 rand arrive as 10,000 emalangeni.

Is your money in euros or pounds, while the recipient needs emalangeni? A manager will suggest the best way to send it with a single exchange along the way.

Payments from South Africa and within the country: the 5 million emalangeni rule

Eswatini's banks are linked with South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia by the Southern African settlement system run by the South African Reserve Bank. In July 2026, 22,862 Eswatini payments worth 19,780.54 million rand ($1.2 billion) went through it; 4 of the country's banks and the Central Bank of Eswatini work in the system. The order of payments is set by the central bank's rules:

PaymentHow it goesFrom what date
From South Africa, Lesotho or Namibia up to 5 million emalangeni ($310,000)a small transfer, moving to the regional instant payment systemthe move is completed by 31 March 2027
From South Africa, Lesotho or Namibia over 5 million emalangenia large transfer through the Southern African settlement systemapplies now
Within Eswatinithe fast payment system between banks and mobile money walletssince 11 December 2024

The Central Bank of Eswatini rule on transfers within the rand area has applied since 31 March 2025, and the 5 million emalangeni threshold in it separates small transfers from large ones.

A recipient in Eswatini spends money from South Africa straight away: shops and markets accept the rand on a par with the lilangeni.

We will help you send money to Eswatini

Mistakes cost more than fees: euros exchanged into dollars and then into rand with a double loss, a payment from South Africa without a stated purpose, a transfer over 5 million emalangeni sent without the full set of papers, a bank in Eswatini without papers on the origin of the money. We will help you avoid them: we choose a legal transfer route from your country, prepare documents on the origin of the money for the bank in Eswatini and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: the calculation depends on the amount, the currency and the sending country.
