How to send money to Namibia: routes and timing on 9 October 2026

The routes were checked on 9 October 2026. Money reaches Namibia by bank transfer in 1-3 business days and is credited in Namibian dollars, which are equal to the South African rand. From countries outside the common monetary area a payment goes in currency, and the transfer states the account number, the branch code and the bank's international code.

Did a transfer to Windhoek not go through the first time? There are usually more options than it seems: tell a manager the sum and the purpose, and they will find a suitable route.

The Namibian dollar equals the rand: what this means for a transfer to Namibia

1 Namibian dollar equals 1 South African rand: Namibia is part of a common monetary area with South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, and the rand is also legal tender in the country. Money and goods move freely between the area's countries, without currency permits, so money from South Africa reaches Namibia as easily as within one country.

Against the US dollar the Namibian dollar moves together with the rand: 16.62 per dollar on 9 October 2026. Payments from countries outside the area are settled in currency or in Namibian dollars from a non-resident account at a bank in the country, and non-residents' investments in company capital are outside the scope of currency control. So the cost of living in Namibia is conveniently counted in rand, and the transfer sum in dollars is checked against the rate on the day of sending.

If the money comes from Europe or Asia, it is convenient to hold it in a currency account at a Namibian bank and change it as you spend. So that the transfer arrives in the right currency and without extra exchange, we will suggest how best to send money to Namibia. The capital is covered on the Windhoek page.

We will help you send money to Namibia

Mistakes cost more than fees: a double exchange through the rand when the money could go straight to a currency account, paying for a farm before the minister's consent, sending the price of a home outside the deal lawyer's account. We will help you avoid them: we will choose the route and timing, prepare documents on the source of the money for the bank and carry out the transfer through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: the cost depends on the sum and the purpose of the transfer.

A home in Windhoek or Swakopmund: how to pay for a purchase from abroad

A foreigner buys a home in Namibia's towns in their own name, without a company or a local partner, and agricultural land with the minister's written consent under a 1995 law. The price of the home is sent to the account of the lawyer who handles the deal and registers the title, and the bank matches the payment with the sale contract.

Since June 2026 Namibia has had the central bank's instant payment system: on 17 June government benefits were paid through it almost instantly for the first time. The next stages are transfers between people, payments in shops and transfers between banks and wallets through familiar banking apps.

If buying a home is part of a move, start with the residence permit terms: the sums and timing are collected on separate pages. Choosing a home is on the property in Namibia page, moving through investment on the residence permit in Namibia page, and taxes on the taxes in Namibia page.

A large transfer to Namibia: thresholds up to $10,000, up to $100,000 and above

  • Up to $10,000. The bank checks the recipient's name, the account number and the branch code, and the purpose: family expenses, rent, travel.
  • $10,000-100,000. You need the sender's account statement and a contract: a lease, an employment contract, a deposit on a home.
  • From $100,000. The bank looks at the source of the money, the sale contract and the details of the deal lawyer. For such a sum a manager will put together the documents with you.

What to show the bank about the source of the money is described in the article on proof of source of funds, and money from selling a home in the article on moving home sale proceeds abroad. Moving with capital is covered on the capital relocation page.
