How to send money to South Africa in 2026: rand or dollars, euros and pounds with no exchange to an account with a payment purpose code

7 min read ·

In South Africa a transfer goes to an authorised bank: a resident gets rand or keeps dollars, euros and pounds in a currency account, a non-resident gets rand that can be sent back. The sender needs the bank code, account number and branch code. In 2026 the bank asks the reason, and from $10,000 3 months of statements.

The payment purpose code: what a South African bank will ask when crediting

A transfer from abroad is accepted only by an authorised bank, and under the central bank's rules it gives each incoming payment a code from the list of balance of payments categories. So the bank will ask the recipient the reason for the transfer: a gift from family, a salary, payment for services, an investment.

A South African resident sells the incoming currency to the bank or keeps it in a currency account. At Standard Bank the recipient has up to 30 days to choose the moment to exchange into rand. Not sure which code to give the bank? A manager will choose the wording for your situation.

Rand or currency: a resident account and a non-resident account

For a foreigner without a residence permit a rand account is opened as a non-resident account, and a currency account can be opened next to it. Banks ask for a passport, proof of address and income, statements for 3 months and information on the source of the money. Some banks open such an account remotely with notarised copies.

Taking money out has been easier since 2026: a South African resident's annual allowance for transfers abroad rose from 1 to 2 million rand, which is $130,000.

No international account number: a universal branch code

South Africa has no international account number. The sender is given the bank's international code, an 8-11 digit account number, the recipient's name and the branch code. Large banks have universal codes for any branch: Absa 632005, First National Bank 250655, Standard Bank 051001, Capitec 470010.

Within the country the banks' instant payment system has worked since 13 March 2023: around the clock, by account or phone number. Since October 2024 banks have been raising the limit to 50,000 rand per transfer, which is $3,100.

A gift from family: the donor pays the donations tax

In South Africa the donations tax is paid by a resident donor: 20% up to 30 million rand cumulatively and 25% above that. Since 1 March 2026, 150,000 rand a year can be given tax-free, which is $9,100. A gift from a non-resident from abroad is not subject to this tax.

A South African resident pays income tax on worldwide income. A salary abroad of up to 1.25 million rand, which is $76,000, is exempt if the employee spent more than 183 days abroad in 12 months, 60 of them in a row.

A house in Cape Town: transfer duty from 1,210,000 rand

Foreigners buy homes and land in South Africa on the same terms as citizens. If the purchase is paid for by bringing in currency, the title deed is endorsed as non-resident, and the sale proceeds are later freely sent abroad.

A bank gives a non-resident a rand mortgage for the same sum that was brought in from abroad, that is up to 50% of the price. Transfer duty is paid by the buyer; the scale has applied since 1 April 2025 and did not change in 2026:

Home priceTransfer duty

A $200,000 house at the rate of 7 October 2026 costs 3,322,760 rand, and the duty is 142,860 rand, which is $8,600. Found a house? A manager will calculate the transfer with the duty and the mortgage. The city is described on the Cape Town page.

Papers for a South African bank by size of the sum

Banks check clients under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 as amended in 2022, and supervision is carried out by the Prudential Authority at the central bank. On 24 October 2025 South Africa left the list of countries under increased monitoring of the international anti-money-laundering task force. In 2026 the set of papers grows with the sum:

TransferThe South African bank's questionThe answer in papers
Up to $10,000the reason for the transfer and the purpose codea letter on the purpose: gift, salary, services
$10,000-$100,000the source of the moneystatements for 3 months, proof of income
From $100,000the origin of the money and the dealan asset sale contract, a tax return, a house purchase contract

Papers for a large sum are best collected before sending: the bank will credit the money with no pause for requests. A manager will put together the package for your bank, and countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.

We will help you send money to South Africa

A wrong purpose code, rand in an ordinary account instead of a non-resident one, a house bought without the endorsement on bringing in currency: small things like these delay money or make it hard to send back abroad. We will go through your purpose, suggest an account and a transfer route, prepare documents for the bank in South Africa and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and the cost are with a manager in the chat: it all depends on the amount, the currency and the purpose of the transfer to South Africa.
