How to send money to Taiwan in 2026: exchange up to $5 million a year, a foreigner's account and tax-free gifts
Money reaches Taiwan by bank transfer in 1-3 business days, and in 2026 the key is the exchange rules. A resident exchanges up to $5 million a year, a non-resident up to $100,000 per transaction, and from $16,000 the bank asks for the purpose. A gift of up to $77,000 a year from each donor is not taxed.

Currency exchange in Taiwan: $5 million a year and $100,000 at a time
Taiwan sets no ceiling on the sum arriving from abroad, but it counts the exchange of currency into Taiwan dollars. A Taiwan resident exchanges up to $5 million a year, and a non-resident up to $100,000 per transaction. Above these sums the exchange is carried out with Central Bank of Taiwan approval on the basis of documents on the deal.
Money in a foreign currency account does not count towards these sums: the rule concerns only exchanging currency into Taiwan dollars and back. So a large transfer is conveniently credited in dollars or euros and exchanged as payments come due.
The sending country has its own rules for sending money out, and they do not depend on Taiwan. If the bank in your country does not send a payment to Taipei directly, tell a manager where the money is coming from: a legal route can be found for less straightforward directions too.
Which documents a transfer to Taiwan from 500,000 Taiwan dollars needs
$16,000 (500,000 Taiwan dollars) is the threshold from which a Taiwanese bank fills in a foreign exchange transaction form. It states the purpose of the transfer, the sender and the recipient: family support, study, buying a home, investing in a company.

For $500,000 or more in one transaction, a bank exchanges money for an individual on the basis of a contract or another document explaining the deal: a home sale contract, inheritance documents, a gift agreement. The document is shown before the exchange, so it is prepared in advance, not on the day of payment.
Separate rules for business in Taiwan are covered elsewhere: registration, capital and a company account in the article on registering a company in Taiwan, and the entrepreneur visa on the Taiwan startup visa page.
Sending money to yourself in Taiwan: a resident certificate or an offshore unit
A foreigner living in Taiwan opens a Taiwan dollar account with a resident certificate and a second document such as a passport. Without a resident certificate you need a passport with a visa and a unified identification number for foreigners, issued by Taiwan's immigration agency.
A non-resident opens a foreign currency account at the offshore banking unit of a Taiwanese bank: such units work with foreigners and companies without local registration, and money in the account is held only in foreign currency.
$95,000 (3 million Taiwan dollars) per depositor at one bank has been insured by the state deposit insurance corporation since 1 January 2011. Foreign currency deposits are insured too, and the payout is made in Taiwan dollars.
Details for a transfer to a Taiwanese bank
Taiwanese banks have no single international account number. The payment order gives the account number, the bank's 8- or 11-character international code, the branch name and the recipient's name in Latin letters exactly as at the bank: these details are in the bank statement or app.
The account currency is chosen in advance. If dollars are sent to a Taiwan dollar account, the bank exchanges them on crediting at its own rate, and for a resident this exchange counts towards the annual $5 million. To a foreign currency account the money arrives without exchange, and it can be exchanged in parts.
Gift tax in Taiwan: 2.44 million Taiwan dollars a year
$77,000 (2.44 million Taiwan dollars) a year is what each donor gives without gift tax, an exemption in force since 2022. Gifts above this sum are declared by the donor to the tax office within 30 days.

Gift tax in Taiwan is paid by a donor who lives in Taiwan, on all property wherever it is. A donor living abroad pays it only on property in Taiwan, so money from a relative's foreign account is not subject to Taiwanese gift tax.
Moving your own money from your own account abroad to your own account in Taiwan is not income. The payment purpose states the reason, and for a gift the degree of kinship, so that the purpose in the foreign exchange transaction form matches the payment order.
Want to help relatives in Taiwan with a large sum? A manager will suggest how to spread a gift across donors and years so each stays within their exemption.
We will help you send money to Taiwan
Mistakes cost more than fees: an exchange above the per-transaction threshold without a document on the deal, a purpose in the foreign exchange transaction form that does not match the payment order, the whole sum in Taiwan dollars instead of a foreign currency account, a gift above the exemption without a return within 30 days. We will help you avoid them: we choose a transfer route from your country, plan the exchange under the Central Bank rules, prepare documents on the origin of the money and carry out the transfer through licensed partners.
Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: everything depends on the sum, your status in Taiwan and whether an exchange is needed.
How much money can be sent to Taiwan at once
The law sets no ceiling on an incoming payment to Taiwan, and the papers depend on the size of the transfer and whether you exchange currency. Checked on 8 October 2026:
| Sum | What a Taiwanese bank will ask for | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | the details and the payment purpose | the account number, the recipient's name, the bank code |
| $10,000-100,000 | from $16,000, a foreign exchange transaction form with the purpose | a statement, an income certificate or the contract the money is paid under |
| From $100,000 | for a non-resident, exchange above $100,000 per transaction with Central Bank approval, and from $500,000 a document on the deal | a property sale contract, inheritance documents, a gift agreement, statements for all accounts on the money's path |
How to confirm where money comes from is covered in the articles on proof of source of funds and sending a large sum abroad, and home sale proceeds in the article on moving home sale proceeds abroad.

Where money goes from Taiwan: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom
From Taiwan money most often goes for children's study and buying homes abroad. An outgoing transfer is also an exchange of Taiwan dollars into currency, and for a resident the annual $5 million limit applies to it too:
- United States: an account with a passport, deposits insured up to $250,000
- Canada: no ceiling on the sum, no gift tax
- United Kingdom: deposits insured up to $160,000 at one bank
- Australia: an account before arrival, a tax number for interest
Sending money to neighbouring countries
- China: yuan to a card, exchange up to $50,000 a year
- Japan: yen by bank transfer, and the bank reports sums from $6,400 to the tax office
- South Korea: transfers with no ceiling on the sum, and the bank asks the purpose
- Philippines: pesos and family
- Thailand: from $50,000 the bank fills in a foreign exchange transaction form
- Hong Kong: dollars and yuan without exchange
Capital routes for all countries are on the capital relocation page.
