US dollar or Liberian dollar: which currency to send in

Liberia lives on two currencies. According to the central bank's strategic plan for 2025-2029, at least 70% of the money in circulation and more than 90% of deposits are in US dollars. So for a family in Monrovia it is most convenient to send dollars to a dollar account: the transfer arrives with no exchange, and Liberian dollars are bought locally for small expenses.

There is no international account number in Liberia. The sender is given the recipient bank's international code, the account number and the account currency: if US dollars are stated, the money arrives one to one.

Instant transfers between wallets: what the central bank launched in December 2025

On 16 December 2025 the Central Bank of Liberia opened an inclusive instant payment system. As the first step it linked the wallets of two mobile operators, Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia, and banks are joining next. Since 2026 the fee for a transfer between operators through the system is no more than 1% for sums from $1 to $2,000 and no more than $25 for larger sums.

Under the central bank's mobile money rules a wallet is kept in US dollars or Liberian dollars. Send money to relatives' wallets and put a large sum in an account? A manager will suggest the route for each sum.

An account at a bank in Monrovia for business and transferring profit

Under Article 11 of the 2010 investment law, an enterprise is guaranteed transfers into and out of Liberia through authorised banks in a freely convertible currency: of the capital invested, payments on foreign loans, and proceeds from selling the business after taxes. A foreign investor opens bank accounts on the same terms as Liberian companies.

Tax in Liberia: 182 days, a scale up to 25% and 15% on interest

Under the tax code a resident is someone who lives permanently in Liberia or has spent more than 182 days in the country in any 12 months. A resident pays tax on worldwide income, a non-resident only on income from Liberia. The scale for a resident: up to 70,000 Liberian dollars a year 0%, then 5%, 15% and 25%. Deposit interest is taxed at 15%, and interest up to 200 Liberian dollars a year is not taxed.

Land in Liberia: a lease for 10, 15 or 25 years against investment

Under Article 22 of the 1986 Constitution and Article 8 of the 2018 land rights law, land is owned by a citizen of Liberia or a company wholly owned by citizens. A foreigner takes a lease or a concession, and under Article 60 the term depends on the investment in the plot: from $100,000 - 10 years with a 5-year extension, from $500,000 - 15 years with a 10-year extension, from $1 million - 25 years with a 10-year extension.

A lease is made in writing and signed by the landowner. For a farm, a hotel on the coast or a warehouse the money is sent to the company's account. A manager will go through the project and the procedure for paying the lease.

A large transfer to Liberia: what papers to prepare

Banks in Liberia check clients under the law on countering money laundering and terrorist financing, and the central bank supervises banks under the 2025 banking law. In 2026 the papers grow with the sum:

AmountWhat a bank in Monrovia will askWhat to show
Up to $10,000the recipient and the purposethe purpose: family, studies, medical treatment
$10,000-$100,000the source of the moneya bank statement, an income certificate
From $100,000the origin of the money and the projecta property sale contract, a lease or concession agreement, company documents

A package put together before sending speeds up the crediting of a large sum. Countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.
