The dinar is pegged to a currency basket, not to the dollar
Since 18 March 1986 the Central Bank of Libya has held the dinar not to the dollar but to the special drawing rights basket, which includes the dollar, euro, yuan, yen and pound. That is why the rate against the dollar changes every day, but within narrow limits:
| Date | Average rate, dinars per dollar |
|---|---|
| 7 October 2025 | 5.4214 |
| 1 July 2026 | 6.4134 |
| 1 September 2026 | 6.352 |
| 1 October 2026 | 6.4063 |
| 7 October 2026 | 6.4241 |
Central Bank of Libya rates. From July to October 2026 the dollar moved within a 6.35-6.43 dinar range, so the sum for a family can be planned in advance. On 7 October the euro was worth 7.2097 dinars: the bank credited €1,000 from Italy or Germany as 7,191.7 dinars at the buying rate.

We will help you send money to Libya
Mistakes cost more than fees: the sum in dinars worked out at the old rate, dollars exchanged twice along the way, a transfer sent through a chain of banks with extra fees, a bank in Libya without papers on the source of the money. We will help you avoid them: we choose a legal transfer route from your country, check the transfer for your case, prepare the source-of-funds documents for the bank in Libya and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.
Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: the cost depends on the sum, the currency and the sending country.
Sending $10,000 or more to Libya: which papers a bank in Tripoli needs
The recipient's bank in Libya asks more questions the larger the transfer. On 9 October 2026:
| Amount | The Libyan bank's question | What to show |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | to whom and why | name and account number, a note: family support, studies, medical care |
| $10,000-100,000 | where the money comes from | six months of statements, an income certificate |
| From $100,000 | the whole path of the money | a contract for the sale of a home or a stake, a tax return, statements |
How to gather the documents is explained in proof of source of funds, sending large sums abroad and moving home sale proceeds abroad.
Your bank does not send payments to Libya directly, or the sum is over $100,000? There are usually more options than it seems: a specialist will look at your situation, prepare the source-of-funds documents and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting; moving capital step by step is described on the capital relocation page.
