Who can get the visa

The visa is open to foreign nationals from Portuguese-speaking countries, ECOWAS member states, Europe and North America who work for a company outside Cabo Verde or are self-employed.

Financial requirements

You need to show an average bank account balance over the last 6 months of €1,500 (roughly $1,800) for an individual applicant, or €2,700 for a family. This is an account balance, not monthly income.

How much the visa costs in 2026

Since 1 February 2026 Cabo Verde's migration service has charged fees under a new table. The remote worker visa fee is about $55 per person, and an airport security fee of about $35 is paid on arrival. Add health insurance for the whole stay and document preparation.

Documents to apply

1. A passport valid for at least 6 more months.
2. Proof of remote work: a contract with a foreign employer or clients, or documents for your own business abroad.
3. Bank statements for the last 6 months with an average balance of at least €1,500, about $1,700, for a single applicant and €2,700, about $3,100, for a family.
4. Health and travel insurance for the whole stay.

The application is filed online, and on arrival you show the documents to border officers and receive the visa stamp.

Taxes for remote workers

Under the programme a remote worker gets temporary residence but does not become tax resident, so their foreign income is exempt from Cabo Verde income tax. Obligations to the country where you remain tax resident still apply: Russia, for example, taxes the worldwide income of anyone who spends 183 days or more there within 12 consecutive months. Entry in 2026: who needs a visa in advance

Citizens of Russia, the EU, the UK, the US and Canada enter without a visa: they need online pre-registration in the government system and an airport security fee of about $35. Since 1 January 2026 Cabo Verde has stopped admitting citizens of 91 countries without a visa obtained in advance, including in transit. The list includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, so their citizens must get a visa before travelling.

The remote worker visa covers a year at most. To live on the islands longer you need a residence permit. Under the 2023 citizenship law, Cabo Verde grants a passport after 5 years of legal residence with no language exam, but it is residence permit time that counts. Island life: currency, language, links to Europe

The local currency is the Cabo Verde escudo, fixed at 110.265 escudos per euro, so costs are easy to count in euros. The official language is Portuguese, and Creole is spoken day to day. The islands are one hour behind Greenwich Mean Time, close to Lisbon and London time, and there are direct flights between Cabo Verde and Lisbon.
