Two kyat rates: the reference 2,100 and the market 3,660 per dollar
3,660 kyat per dollar is the market rate on 8 October 2026, and, as the Central Bank of Myanmar states, most deals in the country go through at it. The bank publishes the reference rate of 2,100 kyat for information only. It calculates the dollar rate as a weighted average of deals between banks and between banks and their clients.
The difference is more than 1.7 times: $500 at the market rate gives the recipient 1,830,000 kyat, while at the reference rate it would be 1,050,000. Each licence names the countries it accepts money from: 6 services work with Thailand, 7 with Singapore, 4 with Malaysia, and there are services for transfers from Japan, Korea, China and Australia. The central bank publishes the list with company addresses on its website, so a service's licence is easy to check before sending money.
Through such a service money reaches the recipient in kyat, to a bank account or a mobile wallet. The central bank also keeps lists of mobile financial service operators and of banks with mobile apps, and within the country people pay with a single national code for phone payments.

Payments to Myanmar since October 2022: what to prepare in advance
Since October 2022 the intergovernmental anti-money laundering body has listed Myanmar among countries where payments need enhanced checks, and it confirmed this in June 2026. So the sender's banks ask in more detail about the recipient, the purpose and the source of the money, and a quick answer speeds up the transfer.
Transfer documents are prepared before sending: the recipient's name is written as on their ID, and a basis is attached to the payment purpose, such as a contract or a tuition invoice. Then the bank processes the payment without extra queries.
A transfer to Myanmar by sum: what papers to show the bank
- Up to $10,000. The recipient's name as on their ID, the account or phone number and the purpose: family support, study, medical treatment.
- $10,000-100,000. The sender's account statement and a contract or invoice: tuition, rent, payment for goods.
