A personal Mexican bank account is needed by those who live in Mexico or spend much of the year here: for rent, utilities, salary, buying property and card payments. Mexican banks are supervised by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) and open full accounts mainly for foreigners with residence permits. On a tourist entry card an account is usually refused or limited to a basic low-limit account.

Can you open an account in Mexico without residence or a visit

A full account is hardly ever opened without a residence permit: on a tourist entry card a bank will at best offer a basic low-limit account, and more often refuse. The exception is buying property: some banks open an account for a non-resident for a specific deal, with the contract and proof of funds. Accounts are not opened remotely for foreigners; identity is checked at a branch, and digital banks usually require the population registry number, which is issued only with residence.

Which banks accept foreigners

Large national banks and the Mexican subsidiaries of international groups open accounts for foreigners with residence to one standard: residence card, address, registry number. Digital banks are handier in the app but stricter on documents. Mid-sized banks are more willing to take clients with income from abroad if the source of funds is documented. Mexican banks work with US correspondent banks and follow their sanctions rules, so any bank will reject payments linked to sanctioned persons and banks.

Peso and dollar accounts

The main personal account is opened in Mexican pesos. Under Bank of Mexico rules, US dollar current accounts for individuals are mainly available to residents of the border strip and the Baja California peninsula; others hold pesos and keep dollars in investment or term products. So if you need dollars, we choose the account format in advance.

Timelines and account costs

With documents ready, the account is usually opened on the day of the visit, online banking is connected at once, and domestic transfers run around the clock through the Bank of Mexico's instant payment system. Under Bank of Mexico rules banks must offer a basic account with no maintenance fee but low limits. Ordinary accounts have a minimum balance and a monthly fee below it. Transfers abroad and currency exchange are charged at the bank's rates, which are compared before choosing.

A Mexican account starts with residence and a registry number

The law does not stop you from applying to a Mexican bank on your own. But mistakes cost more than any fees: trying to open an account on a tourist card, no population registry number or proof of address, mismatched details in the passport and residence card, a large transfer from abroad without proof of funds. Murblz specialists choose the bank for your status, help obtain the registry number and tax ID, prepare the documents and accompany the branch visit.

The account, residence and buying a home

For temporary residence based on economic solvency, a Mexican consulate checks 12 months of bank statements with an average balance above the set level, or monthly income over the last six months. The amounts are tied to a measurement unit updated every year, so we calculate the thresholds on the filing date. When buying a home, the anti-money laundering law bans cash payments above a set threshold, so deals are paid by bank transfer: the notary and the bank check where the money came from. That is why it is convenient to open a Mexican account before the deal and move funds with source documents in advance.

Deposit protection and tax

The Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB) guarantees deposits up to 400,000 investment units (UDIs) per person per bank - about MXN 3.54 million, or $195,000, at the rate of 5 October 2026. The bank withholds tax on interest at a rate set annually by the revenue law. A Mexican tax resident declares worldwide income, so we review residence status before opening the account.

Tax data exchange

Mexico takes part in the automatic exchange of financial account information: the bank establishes the client's tax residence and reports foreigners' accounts to their country of residence. From 2027 Mexico also starts exchanging crypto-asset data under the new international standard.

Many countries that tax residents on worldwide income also require them to declare foreign accounts and the income on them, sometimes within weeks of opening the account. Check the rules of your country of tax residence before the first transfer: a missed notice usually costs more than the account itself.

Why Mexican banks refuse

  • No residence permit, only a tourist entry card.
  • No proof of address in Mexico.
  • Large cash deposits or transfers from abroad expected without documents.
  • Citizenship or payment countries on a higher-risk list.
  • Passport and residence card details do not match.
