Personal accounts: Namibia

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

A personal account and private banking in Namibia

Large Namibian banks work alongside South African banks and offer wealthy clients private banking: a personal manager, foreign currency accounts, investment products and asset-backed loans. The Namibian dollar is pegged one to one to the South African rand, and Namibia is in the Common Monetary Area with South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, so transfers within the area are easier than elsewhere. Currency operations are controlled by the Bank of Namibia: money from abroad is best brought in through a bank with documents so it can later be taken out without delay.

We will calculate online the cost of opening a personal account and maintaining it for a year.

The law has no 183-day rule: residency depends on ordinary residence. Deposits are insured by the Deposit Guarantee Authority up to NAD 50,000, about $3,100, per depositor per bank, so large sums are spread across banks and products. More on our Namibia taxes page.

FAQ

Can a non resident open a bank account in Namibia?
Usually you need a residence permit, work permit or study visa. Specific non resident account types exist under exchange control rules, but they are offered selectively and only in person. Without legal status and a verifiable address your odds are low.
What documents are needed for a personal account?
A passport, a valid permit or visa, proof of a Namibian address, proof of income or source of funds, and sometimes a reference letter from your previous bank. Documents in other languages need English translations. The bank will also ask what you intend to use the account for.
Can I open the account remotely?
No - there is no remote onboarding for foreigners in Namibia; a branch visit and face to face identification are required. Promises of an account without you showing up should raise a red flag. Plan the trip and gather documents in advance.
Will my account be reported to my home country?
Namibia is part of the OECD Global Forum on tax transparency, and its automatic exchange status has evolved; for the current position, ask an expert before opening. Either way the bank will ask for your tax residence, and FATCA applies to anyone with a US tax connection. Domestic exchange control reporting applies on top of that.
Is there private banking for wealthy clients in Namibia?
Yes, large banks offer a personal manager, foreign currency accounts and investment products; a foreigner should bring money in through a bank with documents.
Is deposit interest taxed in Namibia?
For a resident, interest, including from abroad, is income taxed on the scale up to 37%; dividends reach a resident tax-free.
Are deposits insured in Namibia?
Yes, since 2026 up to NAD 50,000, about $3,100, per depositor per bank.
Is the Namibian dollar pegged to another currency?
Yes, one to one to the South African rand; Namibia is in the Common Monetary Area with South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini.
Is there exchange control for individuals in Namibia?
Yes, currency operations are controlled by the Bank of Namibia; money from abroad is best brought in through a bank with documents so it can later be taken out without delay.
Does Namibia tax capital gains?
No, capital gains are not taxed in Namibia.
What dividend tax does a non-resident pay in Namibia?
10% or 20% at source; dividends reach a resident tax-free.
