Personal accounts: Norway

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Personal deposits in banks headquartered in Norway are guaranteed up to NOK 2 million per depositor per bank, about $206,900 at the rate of 5 October 2026, rounded up; payout is within 7 working days, and in special cases, such as after selling a home, the guarantee covers a larger amount for 12 months, according to the Norwegian Banks' Guarantee Fund. A bank will open an account for a non-resident if it understands why you need an account in Norway: work, housing, study or relocation.

ID number and electronic signature

A Norwegian bank account requires a national identity number or, if you do not have one, a D-number, a temporary number for people staying in Norway for less than 6 months but paying tax there. Online banking and most services run on BankID, an electronic ID issued by the bank. Banks often reject online applications from D-number holders automatically, so the account is usually opened at a branch visit, which is worth preparing in advance.

Tax if you live in Norway

Norway taxes worldwide income once you spend more than 183 days in the country within 12 months; income tax rates, contributions and wealth tax are on our taxes in Norway page. The bank will ask about tax residence, so we work it out before applying.

What the bank will ask

  • a passport and proof of address;
  • a Norwegian identification number, if you have one;
  • tax residence details;
  • source of funds: salary, savings, sale of property;
  • the purpose of the account and expected payments.

What we do

Murblz specialists assess the chances before applying, choose the bank, prepare the documents and handle the correspondence with the bank until it decides. The quote is fixed in writing.

Who gets refused

A bank will refuse if the source of funds cannot be documented, if the client or their money is linked to sanctions restrictions, or if the purpose of the account does not match the expected payments. We check whether a case involving Russian citizens can proceed before any documents are prepared.
