Personal accounts: Oman

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Oman is a calm Gulf country with the Omani rial firmly pegged to the US dollar: 1 rial equals about 2.60 dollars. Banks are supervised by the Central Bank of Oman, and there is no personal income tax yet. A personal account here is opened by people moving for work or on an investor residence permit, owners of Omani companies, and buyers of homes in tourism complexes where foreigners may own property.

What the bank checks

  • Passport and resident card. For residents the card is the key document; without it the choice of banks and products is much narrower.
  • An employer letter or documents on business and investments.
  • Address in Oman: a lease or title document.
  • Source of funds for large receipts: statements, contracts, documents on the sale of a business or assets.
  • Tax residence: Omani banks report foreigners' accounts to the tax authorities of their countries under international agreements.

The account and residence

Most often the account is tied to a basis for living in the country. A worker gets a resident card through the employer. An investor can obtain a 5-year residence permit with an investment of at least 250,000 rials, about $650,200, or a 10-year permit with at least 500,000 rials, about $1,300,400, including in property. A buyer of a home in an approved tourism complex receives an owner's visa for two years, renewable while they own the property. The money for the purchase and investment goes through a bank, so the account is one of the first steps.

Deposit protection and taxes

QuestionHow it works
Deposit protectionunder the 2024 law, up to 20,000 rials per depositor, ~$52,100
Income tax nownone
Income tax from 1 January 20285% on annual income above 42,000 rials, ~$109,300
Currencyrial, pegged to the US dollar; accounts in other currencies too

Dollar amounts are converted at the fixed rial rate and rounded up. The new income tax will affect only high incomes, but people moving for the long term should factor it in early.

How the opening works

  1. Assessment of your status and choice of a bank for currencies, transfers and service level.
  2. Pack: passport, resident card, address, employer letter or investment documents, source of funds.
  3. Branch visit, signing the agreement, biometrics.
  4. Card, online banking and first transfers.

For residents with a card the account is usually opened within a few days. If there is no card yet, we first arrange the basis for residence and open the account right after.

Who gets refused

The bank will refuse if the client has no resident card and no clear link to Oman, if the source of money cannot be proven with documents, or if the client or their money is linked to sanctions. We check whether the bank works with Russian citizens before preparing documents.

What we do

Murblz specialists assess the chances before applying, help with the basis for residence, choose a bank in Oman, prepare documents and the explanation of the source of funds, arrange the branch visit and handle correspondence until the account is open. If you are buying a home or investing for an investor residence permit, we handle the account and the application together. We fix the estimate in writing; the decision to open an account always rests with the bank.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a personal account in Oman?
Without a resident card it is difficult: Omani banks work mainly with residents. Owners of homes in tourism complexes and owners of Omani companies have a chance. We assess your case before applying.
Do I need a resident card?
For most banks, yes. It is obtained through an employer, as an investor, or as the owner of a home in an approved tourism complex. We prepare the basis for residence and the account together.
Is money in an Omani bank protected?
Yes, under the 2024 deposit protection law deposits are protected up to 20,000 rials per depositor, about $52,100. Large sums are worth spreading across banks.
Is there income tax in Oman?
Not now. From 1 January 2028 a 5% tax applies to annual income above 42,000 rials, about $109,300. It will affect only high incomes.
What residence permit does an investment in Oman give?
An investment of at least 250,000 rials, about $650,200, gives 5 years, and at least 500,000 rials, about $1,300,400, gives 10 years. Buying a home in a tourism complex gives a two-year owner's visa, renewable.
How much does it cost to open an account with your help?
The cost depends on your status and the chosen bank. You can calculate it online in the chat with a consultant, and we fix the final estimate in writing before work starts.
