Personal accounts: Montserrat

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

Montserrat banks and currency

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean. Payments are in Eastern Caribbean dollars, pegged to the US dollar at 2.70 per $1, and banks are supervised by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. The island's banking market is very small, so a local account is opened mainly for those who live or do business on the island.

An account for a remote worker

Montserrat issues a remote worker visa for up to 1 year with proven income from $70,000 a year; income from a foreign employer is not taxed on the island. A local account is handy for rent and daily costs, while the main income usually stays in the employer's country. More on our Montserrat digital nomad visa page.

Documents

  • Passport and a visa or stay permit.
  • Proof of an address on the island.
  • Proof of income and a reference letter from a current bank.

What we do

  • We choose a bank and prepare documents.
  • We help with the remote worker visa.
  • We support the bank visit.

An alternative: an account in neighbouring countries

If your link to Montserrat is weak, an Eastern Caribbean dollar account is easier to open in neighbouring currency union countries with a wider choice of banks. Compare the conditions on our Antigua and Barbuda account, St Kitts and Nevis account and Dominica account pages.

How opening an account works

  1. Preliminary assessment: the account purpose and link to the island.
  2. A pack: passport, address, income, reference letter.
  3. A meeting or video call with the bank.
  4. The bank's decision and online banking activation.

What we do

  • Personal account - opening assistance

FAQ

Can a non resident open a personal account in Montserrat?
In practice no. There are only a couple of banks, they serve island residents, and remote onboarding for foreigners does not exist. Montserrat is simply not a jurisdiction for international personal banking.
Do I need to live on the island?
Effectively yes - accounts go to people who live, work or trade in Montserrat. The island has a remote worker visa scheme, but current conditions and whether a bank will onboard on that basis need checking separately. Holding the visa does not guarantee an account.
What currency does Montserrat use?
The East Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar and issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Banking is mostly local and international card infrastructure is limited. For cross-border needs an account in another country is far more practical.
Does CRS apply in Montserrat?
Yes - as a British Overseas Territory Montserrat takes part in international tax information exchange and maintains beneficial ownership records. There is no opacity to be had here. And no practical upside either, since non resident banking is not available.
Do remote workers pay tax in Montserrat?
No, income from a foreign employer under the remote worker visa is not taxed on the island.
What income is needed for Montserrat's remote worker visa?
From $70,000 a year; the visa is issued for up to 1 year.
How long can you live in Montserrat on the remote worker visa?
Up to 1 year; income from a foreign employer is not taxed during that time.
Is a local account needed for the remote worker visa?
Not necessarily: income can go to a foreign account, while a local account is handy for expenses on the island.
Can you open an account in Montserrat remotely?
Usually the bank asks for a meeting or video call and documents on your stay on the island.
Is Montserrat part of the UK?
No, it is a British Overseas Territory with its own government and laws; the currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar.
Why is the south of Montserrat closed?
After volcanic eruptions the south with the former capital Plymouth remains an exclusion zone; life and business are concentrated in the north.
Is there a choice of banks in Montserrat?
The choice is very small, so many keep their main account in neighbouring currency union countries.
Who supervises Montserrat's banks?
The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, shared by the currency union countries.
Can you receive salary in another country while living in Montserrat?
Yes, under the remote worker visa income usually goes to a foreign account, with a local account for expenses.
