Montserrat on the world map

Montserrat is a small British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. The Remote Worker Stamp program lets foreign nationals live here and legally work for a remote employer or their own business based outside the island.

Who can get the visa

The visa is open to foreign nationals who work for a company outside Montserrat or who are shareholders or partners in one. So it fits both remote employees and business owners, as long as the company itself is not registered on the island.

Income and taxes

You need to show an annual income of at least $70,000. That foreign income is not taxed in Montserrat - the rate is 0%.

Validity

The visa is issued for up to one year and can be renewed.

On a free consultation we check whether this program fits you and help you prepare the documents.

How much the stamp costs in 2026

The application fee is non-refundable, even if the stamp is refused:

  • single applicant - $500;
  • family - from $750.

Health insurance for the whole stay, a police record and travel are paid separately. The stamp lets you live on the island for up to 12 months, and the period can be extended.

We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.

Who can apply

It suits people who earn income from abroad in one of three ways:

  • working under contract for an employer registered in another country;
  • running a foreign company as a partner or shareholder;
  • providing services under contract to foreign clients as a freelancer or consultant.

Annual income must be at least $70,000, and health insurance must be valid on Montserrat.

Documents to apply

  1. Proof of employment: an employment contract or a certificate of incorporation.
  2. Proof of annual income of at least $70,000.
  3. A health insurance policy valid on the island.
  4. A copy of the passport data page and a photo.
  5. A police record.

How to apply and how long it takes

The programme runs under the Remote Employment Act 2020, and applications opened on 29 January 2021. You apply online and pay the fee. A decision usually comes within 7 days of submission. Keep the status in mind: this is permission to stay for up to 12 months, not a residence permit, so it does not lead to citizenship. Working for local employers on the stamp is not allowed.

Island life: schools, currency, getting there

Public primary and secondary schools are free, with a one-time enrolment fee of $38 (100 Eastern Caribbean dollars) per student; private schools are also available. The island's currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged at 2.70 to the US dollar. There are no direct flights from Europe: you reach the island via neighbouring Antigua by plane or ferry.

Taxes: what to keep in mind

A stamp holder's foreign income is not taxed on Montserrat. But this does not remove obligations to the country where you remain tax resident. Russia, for example, treats as resident anyone who spends 183 days or more there within 12 consecutive months and taxes their worldwide income. So plan the year of your move in advance.

The island after the eruption: where people live

The Soufrière Hills volcano awoke in 1995, and the 1997 eruption destroyed most of the old capital, Plymouth. The southern two-thirds of the island remain an exclusion zone, so life is concentrated in the north. The government works from Brades, and a new town and port are being built at Little Bay. The 2023 census counted about 4,400 permanent residents, so Montserrat suits people looking for quiet and nature rather than city life.
