The key 2026 change

Since 5 February 2026 you can no longer apply for the digital nomad permit while in Greece visa-free or on a tourist visa. There is now one route: a national visa from the Greek consulate in your country of residence, then entry and the residence permit in Greece.

How the process works

  1. Consulate. Application for a type D national visa, fee €75, about $90.
  2. Entry. Housing lease and tax number.
  3. Residence permit. Filing with the local aliens and immigration directorate, biometrics and a 2-year card.
  4. Renewal. With proof that income and work for foreign clients continue.

Documents

  • Passport and photos.
  • Contract with a foreign employer, documents of your own company or client contracts.
  • Proof of income: bank statements, payslips.
  • Health insurance for the whole stay.
  • Police clearance certificate.
  • For family: marriage and birth certificates with apostille and translation.

Work and stay rules

  • No work for Greek employers or clients: only for companies and people outside Greece.
  • Family members cannot work in Greece on this permit either.
  • If income falls below the threshold, renewal may be refused.

Taxes

After 183 days in the country in a year you become Greek tax resident and pay tax on worldwide income at 9-44%. New residents who were not Greek tax residents in 5 of the previous 6 years may get a 50% reduction on employment income tax for 7 years; whether it applies depends on how your work is structured. More on the Greece taxes page.

If you need long-term status

The nomad visa requires proof of income at every renewal. If you need residence without income requirements, there is Greece residence by investment from €250,000.

Cost by item

  • consular fee for the national visa - €75, about $90;
  • fees for the residence permit and card in Greece;
  • apostilles and Greek translations of marriage and birth certificates if your family comes too;
  • health insurance for the whole term;
  • housing - from €500, about $570, a month for a one-bedroom apartment in the centre.

Our manager calculates the cost of support for the visa itself in the chat.

How to get approved the first time

  • net income is below the threshold for your family in at least some of the statements;
  • clients or employers include Greek companies;
  • the application is filed from Greece on visa-free entry or a tourist visa after 5 February 2026;
  • the insurance does not cover the whole visa term.
