Business accounts: Greece

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

A company account in Greece is opened at a Greek bank supervised by the Bank of Greece. The bank works with a company registered in the General Commercial Registry, with a Greek tax number and address. The capital controls introduced in 2015 were fully lifted in 2019, so payments within the EU and beyond follow normal rules. The company needs the account from day one: capital is paid in, and taxes and contributions are paid from it. Dollar amounts use the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026, $1.12 per euro.

The company for the account

  • Private capital company: the most flexible form for small and medium business; share capital can start at €1, and a single founder is allowed.
  • Registration through the one-stop service at the General Commercial Registry or a notary; the company immediately gets a tax number and registry entry.
  • Foreign founders obtain Greek tax numbers; foreign companies' documents are apostilled and translated into Greek.

We will calculate online the cost of opening an account for your company and maintaining it for a year.

Foreign founder documents

  • An individual: passport, proof of address, Greek tax number.
  • A company: certificate of incorporation, certificate of good standing, articles and a resolution to set up the Greek company, all apostilled and translated into Greek.
  • The director can be a foreigner; a non-EU national who will personally work in Greece needs a residence permit allowing the activity.

What the bank checks

  • articles and a General Commercial Registry extract;
  • tax registration and ultimate owner details from the beneficial owner register;
  • passports and tax numbers of directors and owners;
  • business description, contracts, address and expected turnover.

Taxes the bank will see

  • Corporate income tax: 22%.
  • Dividend tax: 5%.
  • Social security contributions for the director and staff are paid monthly from the account.
  • VAT: standard 24%, reduced 13% and 6%.
  • Cash. Consumer payments over €500 must be non-cash, so running turnover through the account is the norm for any business.

Electronic reporting

All companies in Greece transmit data on issued and received invoices to the tax authority's electronic system, and from 2026 mandatory business-to-business e-invoicing is being phased in. The bank expects account turnover to match this data, so bookkeeping and invoicing are set up from the first month.

Protection of funds

The Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund protects deposits up to €100,000, about $112,100, per depositor per bank, companies included. Banks do not accept deposits over €100,000 from Russian nationals without EU citizenship or EU residence, under EU Regulation 833/2014.

How opening works

  1. Tax numbers for founders and director.
  2. Company registration through the one-stop service.
  3. Bank file and origin of capital.
  4. The director's or representative's bank visit.
  5. Account opening and online banking.

Why banks refuse

  • The company has no activity in Greece.
  • Ultimate owners or origin of capital not disclosed.
  • Foreign founder's documents without apostille or translation.
  • Sanctions risk among owners or counterparties.
  • Turnover does not match electronic reporting data.
