Business accounts: Guernsey
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
A business account in Guernsey is most often opened for a company registered on the island: a Crown Dependency with its own banks, taxes and financial regulator. The bank decides on two questions: whether it understands the ownership structure and where the money comes from. A Guernsey company is registered in 24 hours, the registry fee is about $140, and the corporate tax rate for most businesses is 0%. Below: who a Guernsey account suits, what the bank checks, how long opening takes, which payments are mandatory and when the bank refuses.
Who a Guernsey account suits
Accounts on the island are opened by holding and family companies that own shares, securities and property, by funds and their managers, insurance and trust structures, and by trading companies genuinely managed from Guernsey. The island is convenient for those who work with the UK: payments run in sterling without conversion, and the banks here are arms of large British and international groups.
An account does not suit a company with no link to the island, a cash business or anyone looking for secrecy. Guernsey reports account information to other countries' tax authorities under automatic exchange, and a company's beneficial owners are held in a register available to the authorities.
We will calculate online the cost of opening an account for your company and maintaining it for a year.
Requirements for the company
The bank looks not only at the opening but at how the company lives afterwards.
- A registered office in Guernsey and a resident agent: a director who lives on the island or a licensed corporate services provider. The agent keeps the beneficial ownership record.
- Annual validation of the company's details at the registry by 28 February. The registry charges penalties for delay.
- A tax return every year, even at the 0% rate.
- For holding companies, financing, fund management, insurance, shipping, intellectual property holding, distribution and service centres: management and expenditure on the island under the economic substance rules.
The bank regularly refreshes its information on owners and turnover. Delays with the registry validation or with answers to the bank lead to restrictions on the account.
What the bank checks
- the certificate of incorporation, articles and a recent registry extract, the list of directors and owners;
- passports and proof of address for every director, owner and account signatory;
- a business description: what the company does, who its clients and counterparties are, in which countries;
- a business plan, expected turnover and typical payments;
- source-of-funds documents for the owners and the company's capital;
- for a group of companies, the ownership chart up to the ultimate owners.
Copies of documents are certified, and papers in other languages are translated into English. Each bank has its own list of certifications, so we build the file for the chosen bank.
How opening works
- Profile assessment: whether Guernsey fits your business and which bank is more likely to accept the structure.
- Registering a Guernsey company if you do not have one yet.
- The document file and business description to the bank's requirements.
- The bank's checks and answers to its questions.
- Account opening and online banking set-up.
Timeline step by step
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Profile assessment and choice of bank | a few days |
| Company registration, if needed | 24 hours after the provider has checked the owners, 2 hours on the urgent track |
| Document file | depends on how quickly documents are gathered and certified |
| Bank checks and account opening | 4 to 12 weeks |
The bank's questions about source of funds and counterparties are what stretch the timeline. The fuller the first file, the fewer rounds of correspondence.
Mandatory payments
| Payment | Amount |
|---|---|
| Company registration at the registry in 24 hours | ~$140 |
| Urgent registration in 2 hours | ~$670 |
| Annual validation for a non-regulated company not administered by a licensed provider | ~$350 |
| Bank fees for opening and maintaining the account | at the bank's rate, depending on turnover and balances |
| Our support | a manager will calculate it in the chat |
Other company categories have their own annual validation fee. Dollar amounts are converted at the rate of 6 October 2026 and rounded up. We handle registry and tax filings together with the account.
The registry fee is about $140, but the bank's checks decide everything
The law does not stop you filing with a bank on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: a bank that does not work with your structure or country, a business description that does not match the payments, undocumented source of funds and a company with no real management on the island where it is required. Each such mistake means a refusal and weeks of lost time. Murblz specialists assess the profile before filing, select the bank, prepare the document file to its requirements, register the company if you do not have one yet and handle correspondence with the bank until its decision. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and we assess the chances honestly in advance.
The support fee depends on the ownership structure and the chosen bank; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
What the bank checks after opening
The checks do not end with the opening. The bank compares payments with the stated business description and periodically asks for fresh documents: accounts, contracts for large transactions, confirmation of the owners. A company always keeps accounting records, while the members of most companies may waive the statutory audit by resolution. But the bank may ask for accounts even without an audit.
If the activity falls under the economic substance rules, the company confirms in its tax return every year that decisions are made on the island: board meetings are held there, and there are staff, premises and expenditure proportionate to income. A mismatch between the return and the account activity is a reason for questions from both the tax office and the bank.
Protection of company money and currency
- The Guernsey deposit compensation scheme protects up to $67,000 per depositor per bank, but only deposits of individuals. It does not cover money of companies, trusts, partnerships or charities, so it is sensible to spread large company balances across banks or hold them in investment products kept separate from the bank's own funds.
- Guernsey uses sterling and local pounds at par with it, so payments with the UK run without conversion.
- Many Guernsey banks are arms of large British and international groups, and client checks follow their group rules: the bank looks at the owner's whole group of companies, not only at the island company.
- A company actually managed from another country may be treated as tax resident there, so directors and the place where decisions are made are thought through before the account is opened.
Common reasons for refusal
- the origin of the money and the owner's wealth cannot be documented;
- an owner, director or counterparty is on a sanctions list;
- the business description does not match the actual payments;
- the structure hides the person who owns or controls the company;
- the company needs a licence from the Guernsey financial regulator and does not have one;
- the company has no real management on the island although its activity falls under the economic substance rules;
- expected turnover is too small for the chosen bank.
Restrictions for specific nationalities
Guernsey banks do not restrict the nationality of directors and owners. But the island applies the UK sanctions regimes: persons on sanctions lists and structures linked to them will not get an account. For nationals and residents of Russia and Belarus who are not sanctioned there is no outright ban, but banks run enhanced checks and many refuse such clients. Place of residence, tax residence and the origin of capital decide. We find out the bank's position before preparing documents.
