Business accounts: Hungary

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Deposits in Hungarian banks are protected by the National Deposit Insurance Fund: up to €100,000 per depositor in each bank, about $112,100 at the rate of 5 October 2026, rounded up, paid out in forints at the National Bank rate. A company's deposit is protected separately from the personal deposits of its members, while sole proprietors' deposits are added to their personal ones, according to the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. A business account is usually opened for a Hungarian company or a company doing business in Hungary.

Company tax in Hungary

Hungarian corporate tax is 9% of the positive tax base, according to the Hungarian Tax Administration. The bank will ask where the company pays tax and how this fits with its owners' tax residence, so we check the structure before applying.

What the bank will check

  • the company's registration and registry extract in Hungary, the list of directors and owners;
  • passports and proof of address of directors and beneficial owners;
  • what the company does, who its clients are and how the business is linked to the country;
  • expected volumes, currencies and payment countries;
  • source of funds documents for the owners.

How opening works

  1. Profile review and choosing a bank that works with such structures.
  2. The document file and business description tailored to the bank.
  3. The bank's review, often with a video call or a director's visit.
  4. Account opening and online banking setup.

A Hungarian company: capital and registration

Most often the account is opened for a Hungarian limited liability company. Its minimum share capital is HUF 3 million, about $9,140 at the 5 October 2026 rate, rounded up. The registration documents are prepared and filed electronically by a lawyer who countersigns the articles, and the company receives its tax number together with registration. The bank will ask for a register extract, details of the owners and confirmation that the capital has been paid in.

Besides the 9% corporate income tax, the company pays local business tax: up to 2% of revenue less part of the costs, with the rate set by the municipality. Dividends to corporate owners are paid without withholding tax, while individuals are taxed at 15%, which a double tax treaty may reduce.

VAT and small businesses

The standard VAT rate in Hungary is 27%, one of the highest in the EU, with reduced rates of 18% and 5%. A small company may opt for VAT exemption if its annual turnover in Hungary is no more than HUF 20 million, about $60,930: this threshold applies in 2026, rising to HUF 22 million in 2027 and HUF 24 million in 2028, according to the Hungarian tax authority. The exemption pays off when clients are individuals but gets in the way if the company buys a lot with VAT and wants to reclaim it.

For the bank, the VAT regime is part of the profile: it compares account turnover with tax returns. So we choose the regime before opening the account, together with an accountant.

If the company trades with other EU countries, it needs a VAT number for such transactions even under the exemption. We obtain it together with the main registration so that the first payment from an EU client is not delayed.

What we do

Murblz specialists assess the chances before applying, choose a bank in Hungary, prepare the documents and business description and handle the correspondence with the bank until it decides. If you need a Hungarian company, we register it together with the account. The quote is fixed in writing; the decision to open the account is always the bank's.

Who gets refused

A bank will refuse if the source of funds cannot be documented, if the client or their money is linked to sanctions restrictions, or if the purpose of the account does not match the expected payments. We check whether a case can proceed with your citizenship before any documents are prepared.
