Business accounts: Bulgaria

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, and deposits in Bulgarian banks are now guaranteed up to €100,000 per depositor in each bank, about $112,100 at the rate of 5 October 2026, rounded up. The guarantee covers deposits of individuals and companies, Bulgarian and foreign, in euro and foreign currency: current, savings, term and card accounts, according to the Bulgarian Deposit Insurance Fund. A business account from overseas is usually opened for a Bulgarian company or a company with a clear link to Bulgaria: clients, suppliers or staff in the country.

Company tax in Bulgaria

Bulgarian corporation tax is 10%, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance; the return is filed with the National Revenue Agency. The bank will ask where the company pays tax and how this fits with its owners' tax residence, so we check the structure before applying.

What the bank will check

  • the company's registration and registry extract in Bulgaria, the list of directors and owners;
  • passports and proof of address of directors and beneficial owners;
  • what the company does, who its clients are and how the business is linked to the country;
  • expected volumes, currencies and payment countries;
  • source of funds documents for the owners.

How opening works

  1. Profile review and choosing a bank that works with such structures.
  2. The document file and business description tailored to the bank.
  3. The bank's review, often with a video call or a director's visit.
  4. Account opening and online banking setup.

Euro, VAT and dividends

Amounts in leva were converted to euro at the fixed rate of 1.95583 leva per euro. VAT registration is mandatory if a company's annual turnover exceeds €51,130, about $57,300 at the 5 October 2026 rate, rounded up. The standard VAT rate is 20%. Below the threshold a company may register voluntarily, and dealings with companies from other EU countries can require registration earlier.

A Bulgarian company pays dividends with 5% tax withheld. The draft 2026 budget proposed raising the rate to 10%, but the idea was dropped, and in 2026 it remains 5%. Together with the 10% corporate income tax, this is one of the lowest burdens on a business owner in the EU.

What the euro changed for an account

On 1 January 2026 banks automatically converted all lev accounts to euro at the fixed rate free of charge. Since 1 February 2026 the euro has been the only legal tender in Bulgaria. For a company this means that settlements with eurozone clients and suppliers involve no conversion and no currency risk, and euro transfers within the EU follow common rules, including instant payments.

The bank has not become any less strict: it still asks who owns the company and where the money comes from. If the company has turnover in dollars or other currencies, we open an account in that currency separately and explain to the bank in advance why it is needed.

What we do

Murblz specialists assess the chances before applying, choose a bank in Bulgaria, prepare the documents and business description and handle the correspondence with the bank until it decides. If you do not have a company yet, we register it together with the account. The quote is fixed in writing; the decision to open the account is always the bank's.

Who gets refused

A bank will refuse if the source of funds cannot be documented, if the client or their money is linked to sanctions restrictions, or if the purpose of the account does not match the expected payments. We check whether a case involving Russian citizens can proceed before any documents are prepared.
