Dominican Republic digital nomad visa: it does not exist
The Dominican Republic has no dedicated visa for remote workers. We cover the legal grounds a remote worker can use to live there, the cost and how not to confuse it with Dominica.

As of 2026 the Dominican Republic has no digital nomad visa: its introduction is under discussion, but there is no law. Remote workers come as tourists for short stays or obtain residence under the incentives law for pensioners and rentistas with foreign income. The nomad visa with income from $50,000 a year and up to 18 months is often confused with the programme of another country, the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Why there is no nomad visa and what it is confused with
The Dominican Republic is discussing a dedicated visa for remote workers: experts propose income of $1,500 to $3,000 a month, insurance and a 12-month renewable term. But as of 2026 there is no law, and you cannot apply. The conditions often attributed to the Dominican Republic - up to 18 months, income from $50,000 a year and zero tax - belong to the remote work programme of the Commonwealth of Dominica, a different island state.
What options exist now
| Option | Condition | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist entry | a short term, stay extension paid on departure | seasonal remote work for a few months |
| Rentista residence | stable foreign income from $2,000 a month | remote workers and investors with regular income |
| Pensioner residence | a pension from $1,500 a month | retirees |
| Investor residence | investment from $200,000 | those investing in business or property |
For a remote worker, rentista residence is the closest option to a nomad visa, but the law is designed for stable and permanent foreign income, such as from investments, rent or pensions. We check before filing whether your remote work income qualifies.
We will check online whether your income is enough with your family included and calculate the visa cost for each member.
Cost in 2026
- proof of income: from $2,000 a month for a rentista or a $1,500 pension, plus $250 a month per dependant;
- migration service fees for residence and the resident card;
- a medical check in the Dominican Republic;
- police certificates, apostille and Spanish translation;
- for tourists, a stay extension fee paid on departure, depending on length;
- our support, if you hand the process to us.
Income is a condition, not a payment. For a family the threshold rises by $250 a month per dependant; a manager will calculate the total for your family in the chat.
Documents for rentista residence
- passport and photos;
- birth certificate and, for family, marriage and children's birth certificates;
- police certificates from countries of citizenship and residence;
- proof of stable foreign income: statements, contracts, deposit or rental documents;
- a medical certificate from the in-country check;
- a residence visa from the consulate.
Foreign documents need an apostille and Spanish translation.
Who is refused
- income below $2,000 a month for a rentista or a $1,500 pension, including dependant supplements;
- irregular income or income not from abroad;
- a criminal record or problems with past entries;
- documents without an apostille or translation;
- for tourists, overstaying without paying the extension fee.
Taxes
You become a Dominican tax resident after more than 182 days in a year. The pensioner and rentista law exempts them from some taxes, such as on importing personal belongings, while income taxation depends on its source. See taxes in the Dominican Republic.
Risks and what may change
- A nomad visa may appear: its introduction is under discussion, and we follow the law.
- Tourist status does not allow work for local companies and does not suit a long stay.
- Confusion with Dominica creates wrong expectations on terms and taxes.
- Rentista income is assessed strictly; irregular income can lead to refusal.
Alternatives
- Costa Rica digital nomad visa - an official programme for remote workers.
- Panama digital nomad visa - for work for foreign clients.
- Temporary residence in Mexico - for people with foreign income.
- Dominica citizenship - the other country confused with the Dominican Republic.
What changed and what we rely on

Sources: the incentives law for pensioners and rentistas with foreign income, the Directorate General of Migration and the Dominican tax authority; checked on 6 October 2026.
