Business accounts: Barbados
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
A company account in Barbados is opened at a local bank supervised by the Central Bank of Barbados. The bank works with a company registered with the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office, with a local address and a clear business. Since 2019 the former preferential regimes for international companies have been abolished: all companies are registered and taxed under the same rules, so the bank looks at real activity, not the form. The account is needed from day one: founders' capital is paid into it, and taxes and registry fees are paid from it.
The company for the account
- Registration with the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office: articles, directors and shareholders, a registered office in Barbados.
- Tax registration with the Revenue Authority, and for VAT once turnover exceeds the threshold.
- Beneficial owner details: the company keeps them and discloses them to the bank.
- Document language: English, the official language of Barbados. Foreign founders' documents in other languages are translated and certified in advance.
We will calculate online the cost of opening an account for your company and maintaining it for a year.
Exchange control
Barbados has an exchange control law. The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar at 2 to 1. Non-residents' foreign currency transactions, bringing in capital and later taking it out follow Central Bank rules: investments from abroad are registered so that money and profits can later be lawfully repatriated. Applications to transfer foreign currency are filed through the Central Bank's online system.
What the bank checks
- articles, certificate of incorporation and directors' details;
- passports and proof of address of directors and owners;
- ultimate owners and origin of capital;
- a description of the business in Barbados, contracts, expected turnover and payment countries;
- Central Bank registration of imported capital if money comes from abroad.
Taxes the bank will see
- Corporation tax: 9% since 2024. Small companies with revenue up to BDS$2 million, about $1 million, registered under the Small Business Development Act pay 5.5%.
- VAT: 17.5%.
Annual company obligations
- Annual return to the Corporate Affairs office with a BDS$100 fee, about $50. Companies formed January to June file by 30 June; those formed July to December, by 31 December.
- Corporation tax return to the Revenue Authority.
- VAT returns if the company is registered for VAT.
The bank asks for fresh confirmation that the company is in good standing with the registry, so an overdue annual return often stops both opening and running the account.
How opening works
- Structure and company registration.
- Tax registration and registered office.
- Bank file and origin of capital.
- Registration of imported capital under exchange control rules.
- Account opening in Barbados dollars and, where permitted, foreign currency.
Why banks refuse
- The company has no activity in Barbados.
- Ultimate owners or origin of capital not disclosed.
- Capital brought in without exchange control registration.
- Payments with higher-risk countries without a clear explanation.
- An overdue annual return at the companies registry or an overdue tax return.
