Business accounts: Belize

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Belize is an English-speaking Central American country with common law and a Belize dollar pegged to the US dollar at 2 to 1. Two kinds of banks operate here: domestic banks serving business inside Belize in local currency, and international banks under the International Banking Act serving non-residents in US dollars and other currencies. Where you apply determines everything: requirements, account currency and exchange control.

Which bank suits your company

Exchange control

The Central Bank of Belize controls residents' foreign exchange: a local company needs its consent for a foreign currency account in Belize and a basis for buying currency. Since May 2025 domestic banks can sell currency themselves to pay for 12 kinds of services, including legal, accounting and IT, up to BZ$100,000, about $50,000, per transaction without separate Central Bank approval. Non-residents working through international banks are outside these restrictions, so we determine the company's status before applying.

Company taxes in Belize

  • Business tax is charged on gross receipts, not profit: from 1.75% for trade to higher rates for professional services, commissions and royalties.
  • Since 2019 Belize international business companies pay tax on Belize-source income and meet substance requirements for certain activities.
  • General sales tax is 12.5%, with mandatory registration above BZ$75,000, about $37,500, of annual turnover.

What the bank checks

  • Articles, certificate of incorporation and good standing, director and owner details from the registered agent.
  • Passports, proof of address and bank reference letters for owners and directors.
  • A business description: clients, suppliers, contracts, expected monthly turnover.
  • The owners' source of capital with documents.
  • For international banks, the minimum balance and fit with their policy.

Why Belize banks refuse

  • No clear activity or contracts; the company is wanted only for transit.
  • The source of capital is not fully evidenced.
  • Higher-risk activity: gambling, crypto, unlicensed payment intermediation.
  • Owners or clients from sanctioned or higher-risk countries.
  • A multi-layer structure with no explained purpose.

Many European counterparties apply extra checks to payments from small jurisdictions, so we prepare a structure description and documents in advance that answer the receiving bank's questions.

How we help

We determine which bank suits your company - domestic or international - prepare apostilled corporate documents, the source of capital file and business description, apply and follow the review until a decision. If there is no company yet, we register it around the bank's requirements.
