Personal accounts: Barbados
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
A personal account in Barbados is opened at a local bank supervised by the Central Bank of Barbados. Banks open accounts for non-residents but ask why the account must be on the island: a house or flat in Barbados, remote work on a local visa, local expenses. Without such a link an account is hard to open. The Barbados dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at 2 to 1 since 1975.
Who needs an account in practice
- Property owners, for house expenses, land tax, utilities and rental income.
- People living on the remote work visa. The 12-month remote work visa costs $2,000 per person or $3,000 per family and requires income of at least $50,000 a year. With it an account is easier.
- People moving permanently, for everyday payments.
- People employed on the island, for salary, rent and local taxes.
What you need
- passport and a second ID document;
- proof of address in Barbados and in your country of residence;
- a reference from your current bank;
- proof of income and source of funds;
- tax number of your country of residence and a form for automatic exchange of tax information.
Exchange control
Barbados has a Central Bank exchange control law. Money brought in from abroad for large purchases, such as property, is registered so that it can later be lawfully taken out. Foreign currency transfers abroad go through the Central Bank's online system. Keep this in mind if you plan to hold significant sums in the account.
Deposit protection
The Barbados Deposit Insurance Corporation insures up to BDS$25,000, about $12,500, per depositor per bank in each ownership category: individual, joint and trust accounts. For large sums this is modest protection.
Barbados tax residency
A Barbados tax resident is someone who spends more than 182 days in the country in an income year, according to the Revenue Authority. A resident who is also domiciled in Barbados is taxed on worldwide income. Remote work visa holders pay no Barbados income tax on earnings from foreign employers, but 17.5% VAT is included in local purchases.
How opening works
- Profile assessment: purpose, link to Barbados, source of funds.
- Choosing a bank and preparing documents.
- Branch visit and identity check.
- Registering imported funds if they are needed for a purchase.
- Account and card, online banking.
Why banks refuse
- No link to Barbados or clear purpose.
- Source of funds not proven.
- No reference from a current bank.
- Sanctions risk by nationality or counterparties.
- Addresses on the island and at home are not backed by documents.
