Business accounts: Nauru

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

Banks in Nauru after 2025

For many years Nauru had one bank, an Australian bank's agency, which stopped operating on 8 August 2025. Since then an agency of another major Australian bank has served the island's residents. Payments are in Australian dollars. Island accounts are opened mainly for residents; foreigners without a link to Nauru usually bank in Australia or elsewhere.

What a company should consider

  • A local account is realistic only with activity on the island.
  • For international payments a company usually opens an account outside Nauru.
  • The bank checks formation documents, owners and source of funds.

What we do

  • We assess where the company should keep its account.
  • We prepare company and owner documents.
  • We support opening the account.

The citizenship contribution: deadlines

The main applicant's contribution is $90,000 for applications filed by 31 December 2026, then $115,000. You do not need to live on or visit the island; a spouse, children, parents and siblings can be included for additional fees. For Australian dollar payments an Australian account is handy: more on our Australian personal account page.

Documents for the account

  • Passport and, for residents, a Nauru residence document.
  • Proof of address and source of income.
  • For a company, formation documents and owner details.

What we do

  • Corporate account - opening assistance

FAQ

Can a company open a bank account in Nauru?
No. There is no functioning business banking sector on the island, settlement runs in Australian dollars through very limited banking access, and the offshore banking licences of the 1990s were revoked. A company has to be registered and banked in another jurisdiction.
Why do banks react badly to Nauru?
In the 1990s the country issued offshore banking licences at scale and ended up on the FATF blacklist before the regime was dismantled. That history still shapes compliance reactions: any mention of Nauru in a structure triggers extra questions. There is no practical upside to the connection today.
Where should a Pacific-focused business bank instead?
Australia, New Zealand, Singapore or Fiji are the usual options, depending on where the business actually operates. Even there, non resident companies face strict onboarding: real activity, a local signatory and a clean ownership chain. There is no easy route in the region.
Do payment providers help?
For cross-border settlement an EMI or payment provider is often more practical than a bank, but they also screen the company's jurisdiction and the beneficial owner. A micro-state company with no operations will not be accepted everywhere or quickly. Check the provider's policy before you incorporate anything.
How many banks are there in Nauru?
After the former bank left on 8 August 2025, residents are served by another Australian bank's agency; the choice is very limited.
What currency is used in Nauru?
The Australian dollar.
Where should a Nauru-linked company bank?
Usually in Australia or another country where business runs: local banking choice on the island is very limited.
Do you need to visit Nauru to open an account?
For a local account, yes, the bank checks identity on site; so accounts are more often opened elsewhere.
Why are there so few banks in Nauru?
The island is very small and international banks are reluctant to keep branches there; since 8 August 2025 one bank agency serves residents.
Do you need to live in Nauru for citizenship?
No, the program requires neither residence nor a visit.
How long does Nauru citizenship take?
Usually 3-4 months.
How many countries can Nauru passport holders visit without a visa?
More than 85 countries.
Can family be included in Nauru's citizenship program?
Yes, a spouse, children, parents and siblings for additional fees.
What currency is used for payments in Nauru?
Australian dollars.
Which bank operates in Nauru now?
Since August 2025 residents are served by a major Australian bank's agency, opened after the former bank left.
Is a Nauru company needed for business in the region?
Usually not: a company and account in Australia or another country with developed banking is more convenient for regional trade.

Where can a Nauru-linked company bank?

Banking choice on Nauru is very narrow, so we find the country and bank that will take your company, prepare the compliance pack and guide the opening. The catalogue covers every country.
