Personal accounts: Slovakia
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
A personal account in Slovakia is a euro account with a eurozone bank: salary, SEPA payments and a card for travel across Europe. EU citizens need only an ID document and an address. For citizens of other countries banks are more willing when there is a residence permit, job, studies, property or family in Slovakia; without such a link some banks refuse or offer a limited service.
Documents the bank asks for
- Passport, plus a second ID document if the bank asks.
- Residence permit or visa if you have one, and a Slovak address.
- Employment and income details, proof of the source of funds for significant inflows.
- Tax residence and the tax number of your country of residence.
Remote opening with video identification is mostly offered to residents and holders of EU documents; non-residents usually need a branch visit.
Taxes on account income in 2026
| Income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Interest on deposits and current accounts, resident | 19%, withheld by the bank |
| Interest, non-resident | 19% or less under a tax treaty |
| Interest, resident of a non-cooperating state | 35% |
| Dividends from Slovak companies | 7% |
The 0.4% financial transaction tax applies to company and entrepreneur accounts; it does not apply to a private individual's personal account unrelated to business.
Tax residence and information exchange
You become a Slovak tax resident with a permanent residence in the country or more than 183 days of presence in a calendar year. Residents declare worldwide income. Like other EU countries, Slovakia automatically reports non-residents' accounts to their country of tax residence.
How the opening works
- Choosing a bank for your status: resident, employee, student or non-resident.
- Preparing documents, translations and the source of funds explanation.
- Branch visit or video identification where the bank allows it.
- Signing the agreement and card issue.
Deposit protection
The Slovak Deposit Protection Fund covers up to EUR 100,000, about $112,100, per depositor per bank. This is the uniform EU level.
Bank or payment institution
An account with an EU-licensed payment institution opens faster, and euro payments across Europe work the same way. But funds there are not covered by deposit insurance: they are protected by client fund safeguarding rules, not the EUR 100,000 guarantee. That is why the main account for salary, taxes and savings stays with a bank.
Why banks refuse
- No clear link to Slovakia or purpose for the account.
- The origin of funds is not documented.
- Citizenship or payments linked to countries under EU sanctions.
