Business accounts: Slovakia

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

A Slovak company for the account: capital and taxes

The account is most often opened for a Slovak limited liability company: minimum registered capital is EUR 5,000, about $5,700. From 2025 corporate tax is 10% for companies with revenue up to EUR 100,000, 21% for others and 24% above EUR 5 million in revenue; VAT is 23%. Ultimate beneficial owner details are entered in the commercial register.

What the bank checks and what it reports

  • The commercial register extract, articles, tax number and details of all beneficial owners.
  • A business description, expected turnover, counterparty countries and the source of capital.
  • The director's identity: a signature at the branch, or notarised and then verified by the bank.

Slovak banks operate under EU anti-money laundering law and take part in the automatic exchange of tax information: if the company's owners are tax resident elsewhere, account information goes to those countries' tax authorities. So the structure and the owners' tax residency are worked out before the account is opened.

How opening an account works

StageTimeline
Chances check and choice of bank2-3 days
Document file with translations1-2 weeks
Bank review and the director's visitfrom 2 weeks to several months

We match the bank to the company's profile, prepare the file and support you until the decision. If declined, we go to another bank with a different risk appetite and set up a European payment institution account for the interim.

Taxes, the bank transaction tax and deposit protection

  • Corporate income tax: 10% on income up to €100,000, 21% up to €5 million, 24% above €5 million.
  • Value added tax has been 23% since 2025.
  • Since 1 April 2025 a tax applies to transactions from the bank accounts of companies and entrepreneurs: 0.4% of a transfer, capped at €40 per transfer, with a higher rate for cash withdrawals. The bank withholds it, and it is worth factoring into the choice of bank and payment flows.
  • The minimum capital of a limited liability company is €5,000, with each member's contribution at least €750.
  • Company deposits are protected by the deposit protection fund up to €100,000 per bank, about $112,100.

The dollar amount is converted at the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026 and rounded up.

How to register a Slovak company

  1. A trade licence from the district office, notification-based for most activities.
  2. Founding documents and paying in capital, at least half of the €5,000 before registration.
  3. Registration in the commercial register, online with an electronic signature or through a representative; beneficial owners are entered there too.
  4. Tax registration and, above the threshold, value added tax registration.
  5. A bank account and payment system setup.

The whole process usually takes two to four weeks.

FAQ

Can a foreign owner open an account for a Slovak s.r.o.?
Yes, it is a common setup, but the bank will test why the account belongs in Slovakia. You will need the commercial register extract, articles, tax number and beneficial ownership details. Foreign-owned companies go through a longer review.
Do I need a Slovak resident director?
The law does not require one. In practice a director from a third country means tougher compliance, and some banks simply decline such files. A local address, staff and Slovak counterparties improve your odds.
Do I have to travel to Slovakia?
Usually yes - the director signs at the branch, or signatures are notarised and then verified by the bank. Not every bank accepts a power of attorney, and it must be apostilled and translated.
What if the bank refuses the account?
Refusals are not explained, so the usual move is another bank with a different risk appetite, plus a clearer business description and proof of turnover. An EU payment institution with an IBAN bridges the gap, but VAT handling, credit and state payments run more smoothly through a Slovak bank.
What capital does a Slovak company need to open an account?
The minimum registered capital of a limited liability company is EUR 5,000, about $5,700. The bank looks not only at the capital but at the real business and the source of funds.
Does a Slovak bank report account information to tax authorities?
Yes, if the company's owners are tax resident in other countries: Slovakia takes part in the automatic exchange of tax information, and account details go to those countries' tax authorities.
