Personal accounts: Gibraltar

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

A personal account in Gibraltar is opened at one of a few local banks supervised by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission. It is a British overseas territory outside the EU, and the Gibraltar pound is at par with sterling. Banks focus on Gibraltar residents and wealthy clients, so a non-resident needs a clear link to the territory and a proven origin of capital. Accounts are opened in pounds and, if needed, in euros or dollars. Dollar amounts use the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026, about $1.32 per pound.

Who needs an account in Gibraltar in practice

  • Gibraltar residents, for salary, housing rent and everyday expenses in the territory.
  • People working in Gibraltar and living in neighbouring Spain, for salary in pounds.
  • Buyers of property in Gibraltar, for the deal, taxes and utility payments.
  • Owners of Gibraltar companies and trusts, if their management is tied to the territory.
  • Wealthy new residents under the special status with capped tax.

We will calculate online the cost of opening a personal account and maintaining it for a year.

Special status for wealthy residents

Gibraltar grants tax residency with capped income tax to people with large capital. From 18 June 2026 the minimum net worth for new applicants rose to £5 million, about $6.6 million; those who obtained the status earlier are unaffected. A mandatory condition is owned or rented housing in Gibraltar, and a local bank account becomes part of everyday life there.

Deposit protection

The Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme protects up to £120,000, about $158,700, per depositor per bank; on a joint account the limit applies to each holder separately. Sums above the limit are spread across banks or held in instruments that do not depend on one bank's stability.

What you need

  • passport and proof of address;
  • a reference letter from your current bank;
  • detailed source of funds and wealth evidence;
  • tax number of your country of residence and a form for automatic exchange of tax information;
  • an explanation of your link to Gibraltar: residence, work, company, property.

Sanctions and taxes

Gibraltar applies UK sanctions rules, including limits on large deposits from Russian nationals and residents, so the bank checks nationality and residence first. Gibraltar participates in automatic exchange of tax information: account details will go to your country of tax residence.

How opening works

  1. Profile assessment: link to the territory, amount, source of funds, nationality.
  2. Choosing a bank: there are few local banks, each with its own minimum.
  3. Documents and references.
  4. A meeting at the bank and review.
  5. An account in pounds, and if needed euros and dollars.

Why banks refuse

  • No link to Gibraltar; the account is wanted only as an offshore account.
  • The amount is below the bank's minimum.
  • Source of funds and wealth not proven.
  • Sanctions limits by nationality or residence.
  • No reference letter from your current bank.
