Personal accounts: Cayman Islands

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean and one of the world's largest financial centres. The local dollar is pegged to the US dollar: CI$1 equals US$1.20. Banks are licensed and supervised by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Opening an account is possible, but banks focus on clients with a real link to the islands and significant balances.

Banks on the islands

  • Category A banks hold a full licence and serve island residents among others.
  • Category B banks operate under a restricted licence, generally with international clients and their group structures.

For an individual, the choice of bank depends on whether you live on the islands, own property there or hold capital through a local structure.

Who can open a personal account

  • island residents, including those under the remote worker programme;
  • owners of property on the islands;
  • beneficiaries of local trusts and foundations;
  • high-net-worth clients who pass the bank's full checks.

What the bank checks

  • the client's identity, address and tax residence;
  • the link to the islands: residence, property, a structure;
  • the source of funds and wealth;
  • the purpose of the account and expected turnover.

The Cayman Islands exchange account information with other countries' tax authorities, so an account here does not hide income: taxes are paid in the country of residence. More about local taxes on our Cayman Islands taxes page.

Choosing the account currency

An account in the Cayman Islands is usually held in US dollars: the local dollar is pegged to it, and most investments, property and payments are in US currency. A Cayman dollar account is mainly for residents' local spending. Many banks offer other currencies too, but servicing them costs more.

Documents

  • passport and proof of address;
  • reference letters from a bank and usually from a professional who knows the client;
  • proof of source of funds and wealth;
  • tax residence details.

Why applications are refused

  • no link to the islands, with the account wanted only as a foreign account;
  • balances too small for the bank's profile;
  • an unverified source of funds;
  • links to sanctioned countries.

How the account opening works

  1. Profile. We establish your link to the islands and the right bank category.
  2. Documents. We gather your passport, address, reference letters and tax residence details.
  3. Source of funds. We prepare a detailed, documented explanation of where the capital comes from.
  4. Application. We file the application and answer the bank's questions.
  5. Opening. After its checks the bank opens the account and sets up remote banking.

An account for a structure

If capital is held by a local trust, foundation or company, the account is usually opened for that structure, and the bank checks its settlor, managers and beneficial owners. Such an account suits family wealth better than a personal one but needs full documents for the entire ownership chain.

Residence for wealthy individuals

Many Cayman account holders obtain a residence certificate there for persons of independent means. A 25-year certificate is granted to those with a continuous income of at least CI$120,000 a year, about $144,000, or with a deposit of at least CI$400,000 in a local bank and an investment of CI$1 million in Grand Cayman, at least half of it in developed real estate. The issue fee is CI$20,000, about $24,000, and the certificate does not allow the holder to work. A permanent certificate requires an investment of CI$2 million, about $2.4 million, in developed real estate.

The islands have no government deposit insurance scheme like those in the EU, so we discuss the bank's soundness and the amount held in one account before opening.
