How to get Cayman Islands citizenship and Caymanian status in 20 years in 2026
The islands have no citizenship of their own. Since 1 May 2026 Caymanian status takes 20 years of residence, a new spouse waits 15, and investment buys only residence.
In short
- The islands have no citizenship of their own. Their passport is British and rests on British Overseas Territories citizenship, a British nationality; being Caymanian is a separate local status under the Caymanian Protection Act.
- Since 1 May 2026 a naturalised territory citizen applies for Caymanian status after 20 years of legal and ordinary residence instead of 15, or 10 years after naturalisation instead of 5. People who held permanent residence, a spouse certificate or the investor certificate on that date, or later win one they had applied for, keep the old clocks.
- Spouses married to a Caymanian on or after 1 May 2026 wait 15 years instead of 7, earlier marriages keep the old period, and a grant through marriage now brings a declaration every year for 7 years.
- No investment buys status. Permanent residence for persons of independent means, with $2.4 million (2 million Cayman Islands dollars) in developed real estate, now runs for 10 years, and its indefinite renewal is at the authorities' discretion, so naturalisation comes after 11 years at the earliest and status after 20.
- Fees went up. The status grant on the naturalisation ground costs $6,000 (5,000 Cayman Islands dollars) instead of $1,200 (1,000), and the issue fee for the investor certificate $240,000 (200,000) instead of $120,000 (100,000).
In detail
The Cayman Islands have no citizenship of their own. The passport issued in the islands is British, and the nationality behind it is British Overseas Territories citizenship under the UK's British Nationality Act 1981. Being Caymanian is a separate local status, the right to be Caymanian under the islands' Caymanian Protection Act, and since 1 May 2026 the road to it is longer. A naturalised territory citizen now applies after 20 years of legal and ordinary residence instead of 15, and the spouse of a Caymanian married on or after that date waits 15 years instead of 7. No investment buys either status. Money buys residence: an investor who receives permanent residence today can naturalise after 11 years at the earliest and apply for Caymanian status after 20.

Two statuses under two different laws
Territory citizenship belongs to British nationality law, though the islands run the paperwork: applications go to the Office of the Deputy Governor, and an adult becomes a citizen only after the oath and pledge at a ceremony in George Town. Caymanian status belongs to local immigration law. The Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board grants it, the Director of WORC (Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman) does so in narrow cases for people born or raised in the islands, and the Cabinet may make no more than four grants a year, each ratified by Parliament.
| British Overseas Territories citizenship | Caymanian status | |
|---|---|---|
| Law | British Nationality Act 1981 of the United Kingdom | Caymanian Protection Act of the Cayman Islands |
| Who decides | Office of the Deputy Governor; the oath and pledge complete it | Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board; the Cabinet in rare cases |
| What it gives | A British passport and consular help, but no automatic right to live or work in the UK | The right to live in the islands and to work there without a work permit |
| Residence before applying | 5 years, or 3 for the spouse of a territory citizen, free from immigration time restrictions | 20 years, or 10 years after naturalisation; 15 years of marriage for spouses married from 1 May 2026 |
| Government fees | $1,600 (1,300 Cayman Islands dollars) to apply, plus a $600 (500) filing fee | $1,200 (1,000) to apply and $6,000 (5,000) on the grant through naturalisation |
The two are linked. The main route to Caymanian status, section 28(3) of the act, is open only to people who already hold territory citizenship through their connection with the islands, by naturalisation or registration, so naturalisation comes first and the local status years later. A territory citizen can also register as a full British citizen, which brings the right to live in the UK. That decision is made in the UK, and the Office of the Deputy Governor charges a $360 (300 Cayman Islands dollars) filing fee for its part. The route for people living in Britain itself is covered in our guide to UK citizenship by naturalisation.
What changed on 1 May 2026
The reform came through the Immigration (Transition) (Amendment and Validation) Acts of 2025 and 2026, and the 2025 act also gave the law its new name, the Caymanian Protection Act.
| Applicant | Before 1 May 2026 | From 1 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Naturalised territory citizen: legal and ordinary residence | 15 years | 20 years |
| Naturalised territory citizen: residence after the naturalisation certificate | 5 years | 10 years |
| Territory citizen through another overseas territory, with the right to reside permanently in the islands | 15 years | 20 years |
| Spouse or civil partner of a Caymanian | 7 years | 15 years, for a marriage or partnership from 1 May 2026 |
| Annual declaration after a grant through marriage | Not required | Every year for 7 years |
The first two rows are alternatives, not a sum: a naturalised applicant qualifies on whichever clock runs out first, and for an investor who naturalises after 11 years that is the 20-year one. Absences for education, health or business can still count as residence if the Board accepts that you would otherwise have stayed.

For spouses, the wedding date decides, not the application date. A marriage from before 1 May 2026 stays on 7 years, or 5 if it took place before 1 January 2004, and a civil partnership formed before that date stays on 7. A marriage or partnership from 1 May 2026 needs 15. In every case the couple must not have lived apart for three months in total over that period, temporary absences for medical, educational or business reasons aside, the applicant must be living in the islands when applying, and a marriage of convenience is refused. The spouse's residence and employment rights certificate now runs for 15 years, and naturalisation waits until it has been renewed indefinitely and held for a year. A missed annual declaration is an offence and a ground for revocation.
Fees rose at the same time under the Caymanian Protection (Fees) Regulations, 2026. On the naturalisation ground the application now costs $1,200 (1,000 Cayman Islands dollars) instead of $300 (250), and the grant $6,000 (5,000) instead of $1,200 (1,000). Through marriage the application costs $600 (500), the grant $2,400 (2,000) and each annual declaration $120 (100). A Cabinet grant costs $12,000 (10,000) on top of a $1,200 (1,000) application. The descent route, for adults who are the child or grandchild of a Caymanian born in the islands, costs nothing.
Who keeps the old clock
The reform protects people already in the system. The new 20- and 10-year periods do not apply to anyone who, on 1 May 2026, held one of these statuses, or had applied for one and later wins the grant:
- permanent residence after 8 years of legal and ordinary residence;
- a residence and employment rights certificate as the spouse or civil partner of a Caymanian or a permanent resident, or as a dependant of such a holder;
- the certificate of permanent residence for persons of independent means, and the certificate for the holder's spouse and dependants;
- territory citizenship through a connection with the islands, by registration or entitlement.
They keep the old 15- and 5-year clocks; for applicants the protection works only if the application is granted, and a refusal does not carry the old clock over to a new one. The 25-year residency certificate and the certificate of direct investment are not on the list. Spouses who became Caymanian before the reform and had held the status for 7 years or less on 1 May 2026 file the annual declarations too.
In the Cayman Islands a missed date costs years, not fees
Three mistakes cost the most here: reading a marriage against the wrong clock, missing the one-year window to renew the 10-year investor certificate, and a long stay abroad that breaks legal and ordinary residence. Each of them can add years to a road that is already 20 years long. Murblz checks your dates and status before anything is filed, prepares the residence, renewal, naturalisation and status applications in order and keeps the calendar of annual declarations. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process.
The cost of support depends on your route, your family and the stage you are at; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Why money buys residence and not status
The act grants Caymanian status on a closed list of grounds: descent from a Caymanian born in the islands, naturalisation as a territory citizen, citizenship through another territory, marriage and widowhood, narrow cases for people born or raised in the islands, and up to four Cabinet grants a year. Investment is not among the grounds. It appears only in the part of the law on residence, and its most expensive route, permanent residence for persons of independent means, is now built as a long probation.
The applicant must show, on the day of applying, that the money is already in developed real estate in the islands. The annual declaration form in the 2026 regulations names the sum: $2.4 million (2 million Cayman Islands dollars). Only the paid-up amount counts, meaning money paid toward the price, the mortgage principal or the development cost, free from any outstanding financing. Developed real estate is a strata lot, a parcel or contiguous parcels with buildings or other improvements, with a certificate of occupancy where one is required. The certificate carries no right to work unless it is varied, and the Cabinet caps the number issued with a quota.
| Step | Before 1 May 2026 | From 1 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Term of the certificate | Permanent from the grant | 10 years |
| Indefinite renewal | Not needed | Applied for in the last year of the term; at the discretion of the Board or the Director of WORC |
| Naturalisation as a territory citizen | After 5 years of residence | After at least a year on the indefinite certificate, so after 11 years at the earliest |
| Caymanian status | 5 years after naturalisation, so after 10 years | After 20 years of residence |
| Issue fee | $120,000 (100,000 Cayman Islands dollars) | $240,000 (200,000) |
The application costs $600 (500 Cayman Islands dollars), each dependant adds $3,600 (3,000) on issue and the same every year, and each annual declaration costs $600 (500). In it the holder confirms that the investment is still in place, that the family has health insurance and that the holder has not been ordinarily resident outside the islands for a continuous year or more. False information about financial standing is now an offence under section 75A, punishable by a fine of $12,000 (10,000 Cayman Islands dollars), a year in prison or both.
The two other investor routes, the 25-year residency certificate and the certificate of direct investment, give residence for a fixed term; our overview of residence routes in the Cayman Islands compares them. Another British territory is tightening the same road, as our review of the planned Turks and Caicos 25-year permit shows.
How Murblz handles a Cayman plan
You can work through this on your own: the act, both amending laws and the fee schedule are public. It is more reliable with professionals: the Board itself decides whether years count as legal and ordinary residence, renewals of the 10- and 15-year certificates are discretionary, and the file must prove years of life on the islands, the marriage and the paid-up investment. Our process is clear and transparent. First we establish which rules apply to you, old or new, then assemble the residence record and documents and file each application when its window opens. The cost is available on request from a manager.
