Personal accounts: Ecuador

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Ecuador has used the US dollar as its national currency since 2000, so an account here is in dollars from the start, with no currency risk. A personal account is opened by those moving to Quito, Cuenca, Guayaquil or the coast on a retiree, investor or digital nomad visa, buying a home or receiving a pension from abroad. Banks are supervised by the Superintendency of Banks and in most cases ask for an Ecuadorian ID card (cédula), which a foreigner receives with the visa.

Visas that require an account

Ecuador's basic wage in 2026 is $482, and visa thresholds are based on it. The retiree visa requires lifetime income of three basic wages, $1,446 a month, plus $250 for each dependent without their own pension. The investor visa requires investment of 100 basic wages, $48,200, for example in a bank deposit or property. An investor's deposit needs an Ecuadorian bank account, so we open it together with the visa application.

Tax on taking money abroad

Transferring money from an Ecuadorian account abroad carries the 5% currency outflow tax (ISD). There are exempt amounts: cash on departure up to three basic wages, $1,446, and card spending abroad up to $5,188 a year. So it is better to bring money into Ecuador for specific expenses rather than hold capital here that will later need to be taken out.

An account for buying a home

Property deals in Ecuador are signed before a notary, and payment is made by bank transfer or certified bank cheque. Money from abroad is brought into an Ecuadorian account in advance: inflows are not subject to the outflow tax, and the bank and notary check their origin. The buyer pays the 1% municipal transfer tax (alcabala). After the deal the account is needed for annual property tax, utilities and receiving rent.

Documents needed

  • Ecuadorian ID and passport with visa.
  • Proof of address: a utility bill or lease.
  • Proof of income: pension, income statement, bank statements.
  • Sometimes a bank reference letter or an Ecuadorian guarantor.
  • A form with tax residence: banks report foreigners' accounts to their country of residence.

Deposit protection

The deposit insurance corporation (COSEDE) guarantees deposits at private banks up to $32,000 per depositor. The limit is lower at small cooperatives, so large sums are kept at top-tier banks.
