Ecuador citizenship: three-year naturalization and unconditional birthright
How one of the cheapest routes to a Latin American passport actually works, and who it does not suit
Ecuador does not sell citizenship. There is no fund you wire money to and no passport six months later. What it does have is increasingly rare in 2026: unconditional birthright citizenship, naturalization after three years of residency, and an entry threshold that starts with a university degree and roughly $482 a month in income rather than a six-figure investment.
The country has been dollarized since 2000, so there is no currency risk in the usual sense - you live, pay and earn in US dollars. Here is how the route actually works: which visas give residency, how the three years are counted, what the exam asks, how long it really takes, and the unpleasant side that promotional articles skip.
What an Ecuadorian passport gives you, and what it does not
Start with a sober assessment. In 2026 the Ecuadorian passport carries visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to roughly 93 countries and territories. That is a middling result: clearly better than most African and several post-Soviet passports, and clearly weaker than any European one.
What opens without a visa: almost all of South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia, where a national ID card is often enough for regional travel. Beyond that, Russia for 90 days in any 180, mainland China for 30 days, Hong Kong for 90, Georgia for a year, Thailand for 60 days, plus Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Mongolia.
What it does not give: you will still need visas for the Schengen area, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Japan. If your goal was to unlock European travel, this is the wrong tool. Its real value is regional. Ecuador belongs to the Andean Community alongside Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, and regional agreements make settling in neighbouring countries considerably easier. Our full country breakdown lives here: Ecuador.
Birthright citizenship with no conditions attached
The constitution recognizes as Ecuadorian by birth anyone born on Ecuadorian soil, regardless of the parents' nationality or immigration status. There is no minimum residence period for the parents, no visa requirement, no rule about how long the mother must have been in the country before delivery. The child is registered with the Registro Civil, receives a birth certificate, a cédula and the right to a passport.
Ecuadorian nationality by birth also extends to people born abroad to a mother or father who was born in Ecuador, and to their descendants up to the third degree of consanguinity. Ecuadorian ancestry therefore reaches deep into family trees, and plenty of people qualify without knowing it.
What the child's citizenship does for the parents
Precision matters here, because this is where the myths live. An Ecuadorian child entitles the parents to a permanent residency visa based on family ties within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity. That is a genuinely strong move: you enter permanent status directly and skip the two-year temporary stage.
But there is no accelerated naturalization for parents of an Ecuadorian child. The clock stays at three years of regular, continuous residence. The shortened two-year track exists only for spouses and registered de facto partners of Ecuadorian citizens, counted from the date the union was registered. If someone promises you a passport a year after the birth, they are not describing Ecuador. We cover the mechanics and consequences separately: Ecuador birthright citizenship.
Uruguay grants citizenship at birth on the same principle, and parents there get permanent residence without waiting: giving birth in Uruguay and your child's citizenship.

Residency: where the road starts
Every threshold in the Ecuadorian system is pegged to the SBU, the unified basic salary. For 2026 it is $482, up from 470 in 2025. Income and investment requirements therefore reset upward every January.
| Category | 2026 requirement | Visa term | Government fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional | University degree registered with SENESCYT plus proof of lawful means of living (benchmark around one SBU, $482 a month) | 2 years | 50 + $270 |
| Rentista | Passive income of at least 3 SBU, that is $1,446 a month, plus $250 per dependent; health insurance mandatory | 2 years | 50 + $270 |
| Pensioner (jubilado) | Lifetime pension of at least $1,446 a month, plus $250 per dependent | 2 years | 50 + $270 |
| Investor | 100 SBU, that is $48,200: a deposit with a term of at least 730 days, titled real estate, or shares in an Ecuadorian company | 2 years | 50 + $270 |
| Family ties to second degree | Relationship to an Ecuadorian citizen or permanent resident, police clearance, means of living | Permanent | Per official tariff |
| Permanent by time served | More than 21 months as a temporary resident, filed before the current status expires | Indefinite | Per official tariff |
Note the asymmetry. The investor visa costs $48,200; the professional visa costs essentially nothing beyond degree legalization. For most people with a university degree, the investor route in Ecuador makes no sense at all. It exists for those without a recognized degree and without qualifying passive income.
Absence rules matter as much as money. A temporary resident may be outside the country no more than 90 days per year, cumulative across the residency period. Permanent residents get a softer limit of 180 days per year during the first two years, with loss of status on repeat breaches. The October 2025 reform tightened this further: permanent residency is cancelled automatically after 24 continuous months abroad, with no administrative discretion left for justified absences.
Naturalization: three years and what actually counts
The official procedure is naturalization by letter, carta de naturalización. It is open to a foreigner who holds a permanent residency visa and has resided in Ecuador regularly and continuously for at least three years. A separate track covers people under international protection recognized by Ecuador as refugees or stateless persons, for whom the period is two years.
In practice the sequence runs like this: two years of temporary residency, an application for permanent status after 21 months, and by the time three years of lawful residence have accumulated you already hold permanent status and can file for naturalization. Those who entered directly on a family-based permanent visa still wait the full three years. Exactly how a given zonal directorate counts the period, from entry or from the grant of permanent status, is worth confirming locally, because practice varies.
Core requirements: at least 18 years old, knowledge of Spanish, knowledge of Ecuadorian history, geography and culture, lawful means of income, no outstanding obligations to the state, and a personal interview explaining your motives. The process is personal and cannot be handled by proxy. Fees are $50 to file and $350 on approval, so $400 per person, with a 50 percent discount for applicants over 65 and a full waiver for disability of 30 percent or more.
Fees are $400 per person, and the exam needs 18 correct answers out of 20
Mistakes cost more than the fees: zonal directorates count the three years of residence differently, the criminal record certificate can expire while apostilles and translations are gathered, and the country exam requires at least 90 percent. Every returned file pushes the passport back by months. Murblz support removes these risks: we choose the starting visa, track residence and travel days, collect and legalise documents in the right order, and prepare you for the exam and interview. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.
The support fee depends on the visa you start with and your family size; a manager calculates it in the chat.
The exam and the interview
The knowledge test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam in Spanish with roughly 20 questions covering history, geography, the constitution, the structure of government, national symbols and culture. The pass mark is at least 90 percent, which in practice means 18 correct answers out of 20. That is noticeably harsher than in most countries, and it needs real preparation rather than an evening of cramming.
The language component sits at conversational A2 to low B1: a conversation, reading comprehension and simple writing. Applicants who completed a university or postgraduate degree in Ecuador taught in Spanish are exempt from the knowledge test, as are elderly applicants, minors and people with intellectual disabilities. Once the file is accepted, the applicant is called for the exam within about 30 days, and the interview follows.
Timelines and what really happens
| Stage | Realistic timing | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Document prep, apostilles, translations, SENESCYT | 1-4 months | Police clearance certificates have a limited shelf life, capped at 180 days after the 2025 reform |
| Temporary residency | 2-year visa | No more than 90 days abroad per year, registration required after entry |
| Switch to permanent residency | After 21 months | File before the temporary status expires or the chain breaks |
| Naturalization filing | After 3 years of residence | Valid permanent status required at the time of filing |
| Exam and interview | Called within about a month of file acceptance | 90 percent pass mark |
| Decision, oath, then cédula and passport | Several months at minimum, no guaranteed window | Do not plan a move around a fixed decision date |
The honest summary: three years is the statutory minimum residence, not the time to a passport. From the first visa to an Ecuadorian passport in hand, four years is a realistic expectation and longer is common. Speed depends heavily on how complete your file is, the workload of your zonal directorate, and how many times they come back with document requests.
Dual citizenship
This part is straightforward and favours the applicant. The constitution states that Ecuadorian nationality is lost neither through marriage or its dissolution nor through the acquisition of another nationality. You do not renounce your existing passport. A naturalized Ecuadorian loses status only through an express renunciation or if the naturalization was obtained fraudulently.
The second question is what your current country says. Ecuador will not object, but the restriction may come from the other side, and that needs checking before you file rather than after.
Taxes: what changes when you become a resident
Tax residency triggers at 183 days or more in a calendar year, or across 12 months spanning two fiscal periods. You can also be treated as resident without hitting 183 days if your immediate family nucleus or your main centre of economic interests sits in Ecuador. A tax resident declares and pays on worldwide income, not just Ecuadorian-source income.
| Annual income, USD | Tax on the base bracket | Rate on the excess |
|---|---|---|
| up to 12,208 | 0 | 0% |
| 12,208 - 15,549 | 0 | 5% |
| 15,549 - 20,188 | 167 | 10% |
| 20,188 - 26,700 | 631 | 12% |
| 26,700 - 35,136 | 1,412 | 15% |
| 35,136 - 46,575 | 2,678 | 20% |
| 46,575 - 62,005 | 4,965 | 25% |
| 62,005 - 82,679 | 8,823 | 30% |
| 82,679 - 109,956 | 15,025 | 35% |
| above 109,956 | 24,572 | 37% |
Non-residents pay a flat 25 percent on Ecuadorian-source income. For income already taxed abroad, Ecuadorian law and the country's double tax treaties provide exemption or credit mechanisms, but the conditions depend on the country and the type of income, so do not rely on them without advice.
One more surprise for anyone holding capital offshore: the currency outflow tax, ISD. The general rate for 2026 is 5 percent on money leaving the country, with an exempt amount of 3 SBU, or $1,446. Fuel and pharmaceutical imports are at zero, and certain productive-sector import lines are at 2.5 percent. The practical meaning is simple: bringing money into Ecuador is easy, taking it out costs 5 percent. That changes the arithmetic entirely if you plan to run an operating business or hold a large account locally. Rates and reporting details are here: Ecuador taxes.

Cost of living
Ecuador remains one of the most affordable countries in the region, and that is its strongest argument. In 2026 a comfortable single budget is 900 to $1,500 a month, and for a couple 1,500 to 2,500 in Cuenca or 1,400 to 2,800 in Quito. A furnished two-bedroom rental in Cuenca runs roughly 650 to $900; Quito sits 15 to 25 percent higher in the neighbourhoods foreigners favour. Lunch out starts around $2.50 and a doctor's visit costs about 40. Treat these as benchmarks rather than guarantees, since prices in expat districts climb faster than the national average.
Who this does not suit and what can go wrong
This is not a mobility passport. If the goal is visa-free Schengen, the US or the UK, an Ecuadorian passport does not solve it and will not start to. Its value is as a Latin American base, a backup document and a way to anchor yourself in the region, not as a travel upgrade.
This is not a remote process. Three years must actually be lived in the country, with a 90-day annual absence cap on temporary residency. Fly in, file, fly out and return for the passport does not work here: continuity is checked against your stamps.
Security is the uncomfortable part. Ecuador's criminal violence escalated sharply from 2021 onward, states of emergency have been declared repeatedly, and coastal cities have suffered the most. Highland Quito and Cuenca are calmer, but nobody choosing a country for a family should wave this away.
The rules are hardening. The reform of the human mobility law, published in the official register on 24 October 2025, shifted the framing from humanitarian principles to national security and migration control: mandatory police clearance on entry in various cases, expedited deportation, broader grounds for inadmissibility, entry bans of up to 40 years, and automatic cancellation of permanent residency after 24 continuous months abroad. The direction of travel is restriction, so do not assume conditions three years from now will be softer than today's.
The tax effect gets underestimated. People move for cheap living and fail to notice that 183 days brings an obligation to declare worldwide income at rates up to 37 percent, plus 5 percent to move money out. For someone living off foreign investment income, that can swallow the entire saving on cost of living.
The exam is serious. A 90 percent pass mark means at most two wrong answers out of twenty, in Spanish. If after three years you are still conversing through a phone translator, you will not reach the passport.
Bureaucracy is uneven. Requirements on apostilles, translations and proof of means are interpreted differently by different zonal directorates, and certificates tend to expire precisely when a new document request lands. Budget extra time and money for re-legalizing paperwork.

The short version
- Naturalization takes three years of regular, continuous residence with permanent status; two years for spouses of Ecuadorian citizens.
- Entry to residency is cheap: a professional visa with a recognized degree, rentista and pensioner visas from $1,446 a month, investor visa from $48,200.
- Birthright is unconditional: a child born in Ecuador is a citizen immediately, and the parents get permanent residency but not a faster path to naturalization.
- Dual citizenship is permitted and no renunciation is required.
- The passport covers around 93 destinations visa-free, but Schengen, the US, the UK, Canada and Japan still require visas.
- The tax price: worldwide income, rates up to 37 percent, and 5 percent to send money out of the country.
